    The mists from the waterfall traveled nearly two miles downstream. That was the first hint that was I was getting close. The waterfall, or more accurately the cave behind the waterfall, was my destination.

    I had left my guides behind the morning, letting them rest at the camp as I continued on alone. I wanted my find to be mine and mine alone. And if possible, I did not even want my guides to know what I had found.

    It had taken years to plan this expedition into the jungle. There were documents to read, stories to listen to and analyze, and pure genius on my part to identify the likely location of the fountain of youth.

    I hacked away at thick vines and bushes as I made my way upstream. Despite the mist in the air from the waterfall ahead of me, the river was too dangerous to traverse. Hidden rapids made the trip almost impossible by canoe. And the jungle on both sides of the river hung over the water so low, there simply wasn’t space for someone to sit in a boat, let alone to actually paddle upstream.

    That left me with the overland route, something I had trained for. My muscles flexed and bulged as I swung the machete, cutting a path through the dense jungle. My free hand remained on my gun at my hip, ready for any danger that might come my way. Man or beast, I was prepared to kill to ensure I was the first person to make the discovery. I was going to be the first person in modern history to find and return from the fountain of youth.
