    NO GOING BACK

This was it. This was going to be my big break in the world of tennis. I had played in grand slams before, but this was the first time that I was ranked high enough to have a shot at winning. Even though I was older than many of my competitors, I was still rising and I fully expected to be a mainstay on the circuit soon. This was going to be my shining moment where I proved all of my doubters wrong and finally took my place among the tennis greats. It was all happening, just as I had imagined, such was the power of visualization.

But on the drive to the competition, something happened that I simply couldn’t control. My car was hit from the side, a driver running a red light and slamming into my car. I remembered the impact, the noise, and then my car starting to spin from the crash. And then I remembered nothing.

I woke up in a hospital room. My eyes fluttered open and the low lights of the room left me confused as to what had happened and where I was. However, the room was unmistakably a hospital room. There were machines to my right measuring my vitals. I heard the frequent beep as it monitored my heart rate. It was an annoying sound, but one I was willing to put up with if it meant I was going to survive.

Oddly, for having just woken up in a hospital, I was surprised at how little pain I now felt. From what I remembered of the crash, I should have had significant and painful injuries. Instead, I felt good, although a bit slow. But waking up feeling good left me to fear something far bigger. How long had it been since the crash?

I stared up at the ceiling, afraid to take stock of my situation. There had to be something more wrong with me than what I could feel. I feared that I had just woken up from a coma or something similar. Not that I had any idea what that was like. But my mind almost immediately went to the worst possible scenario. I couldn’t help it.

My heart rate started to rise as my mind flitted from one doomsday scenario to the next. Maybe I felt so normal and unhurt because I was in the process of dying. This just happened to be the one instant I had left before I finally kicked the bucket.

But then a man appeared at the doorway to my room. He stood there, observing me, waiting for me to react to his presence.

Oh good, you’re awake now, he said before he stepped into my room. He was tall and good looking, and definitely a few years older than me. He was probably pretty good with the ladies since he seemed to have aged well. Not as good as me, but I was aided by being a professional tennis player. I had good enough name recognition to pull in hot women into my orbit and I wasn’t afraid to use them for my own sexual gratification.

I’m Dr. Tanner, the man said as he stood over my bed and checked the instruments beside me. I don’t know how much you remember, but you were in a nasty car crash. You were lucky I was in town, because you wouldn’t have survived if I hadn’t been.

I took a deep breath, trying to take all of the information in. I could immediately tell that it hadn’t been weeks or months, based
