CHAPTER ONE
CATCH A FALLING STARR
Hurry, you dolts! We haven’t got all day.
Scorch and Bed Bugg didn’t mind when Magnus Manchild treated them like mere henchmen, because he paid them well to be mere henchmen. But they hated it when he used words that nobody used anymore like dolts.
What’s the rush, boss?
Bed Bugg asked. We can handle anybody that tries to mess with us.
Magnus smacked the back of Bed Bugg’s head.
That’s no excuse for sloppiness. Now get back to work!
Magnus had reason to be impatient. The bank’s alarm had been ringing steadily for over four minutes and they still hadn’t gotten inside the vault yet. He took pride in meticulously planning his crimes and executing them with clockwork precision, but this robbery had been screwed up from the beginning.
They had arrived late because Scorch took a wrong turn on the way to the bank and then Magnus had been forced to kill the guard because the fool had tried to be a hero. He rubbed his bald head as he paced the floor, stepping over cowering people as he went.
These mishaps weren’t the only things that worried Magnus. When Bed Bugg said they could handle anyone that tried to stop them, he failed to include meddling superheroes. They’d barely escaped capture that last time they went up against Alpha Dog and he wasn’t near as powerful as Magnus’ arch enemy, Ramrod. Magnus preferred making off with their loot without having to fight a superhero.
As if on cue, the front door exploded as the superheroine, Starr Power, burst into the bank. Magnus spun around and aimed his sonic blaster at her, but she was flying too fast and she drove her fists into his midsection, lifting him off his feet and slamming him into a brick wall. His military grade exo suit took the brunt of the attack and saved him from serious injury.
He slid to the floor in a shower of dust and crumbled bricks. Starr stood over him with her hands on her hips. Looking up at her smug face, he also had a nice view of her camel toe. Her silver skintight outfit revealed every muscular inch of her magnificent body.
Didn’t anyone tell you boys that this bank is too big to steal?
Starr said.
Of all the heroes I’m forced to deal with,
Magnus said, as he struggled to his feet. Your clever quips are the lamest.
With her attention on Magnus, Scorch and Bed Bugg had time to get to their assault rifles. The room echoed with the sound of rapid gunfire. Starr was indestructible, so the bullets bounced off her, but everyone else in the bank was in danger of being hit by a ricochet. They screamed in terror as they rushed for cover.
The mayhem confused Starr. She hesitated, trying to decide what to do first, take out Scorch and Bed Bugg or rescue the poor bystanders. The decision was made for her when a bullet struck a fleeing young woman carrying a baby. It hit her in the back, causing her to drop her child as she toppled forward. Moving with blinding speed, Starr caught the baby before it hit the ground. Once she saw that the baby was safe, she turned her attention to the bleeding mother.
I can’t feel my legs,
whimpered the mother.
You will be avenged!
roared Starr.
She glared at Scorch and Bed Bugg. Sensing they were about to get their asses handed to them, they raced for the exit. Starr had every intention of causing them serious physical harm, but she had forgotten about Magnus Manchild.
Other than possessing a keen, diabolical mind, Magnus’ main talent was creating deadly weapons. He had designed his impenetrable exo suit which was equipped with a variety of hidden features like lasers, firearms, explosives, and the like. He’d made a fortune selling his arms to rogue nations, but he needed raw
