The doorbell rang, and for the first time in months, Brendan had no idea who was ringing it. Nobody ever approached his door without any warning, and that included friends. There was always a phone call, a text message, something to give him notice. Packages and takeout were all expected arrivals as well, but he hadn’t been expecting any of those. However, there was no use trying to reason out who was at the door, when he could just check through his peephole and see.

He saw a young woman standing there, her hands behind her back, eyes downcast. Her long brown hair covered her face for the most part, but from the state of her tattered clothes and the skin he could see, she hadn’t had access to a good shower in some time. Beside her stood an enormous man, muscled to the heavens, wearing a police uniform and all the dangerous accoutrements that came with it. The man rang the doorbell again, and Brendan knew he had to open it.

Hi, sorry about taking so long, Brendan said. He adjusted his shirt nervously, trying to realign his buttons.
