    Marina was concerned when her husband said he had found what he called a great little hotel for their long weekend together. Their past experiences with his selections had ranged from a cabin in the middle of the woods with all of the amenities one might expect from the middle of the woods, to a roach-infested hellhole just outside of Chicago. But it was good for him to exercise his planning muscles every so often, because Marina always held out hope that she might one day have a nice vacation without having to figure out every nuance.

    This one was going quite well, as their car showed no signs of leaving civilization. Marina wasn’t able to pry any clues out of her spouse, the man having learned to be tight-lipped about his plans over the years, lest they be brought crashing down by the weight of their insanity before they had even begun. When the car stopped and Marina got out, she was pleased to find herself standing not before a monument to awful trips, but a lovely hotel.

    I thought this might not be so bad. Tony said, standing beside her.

    I’m going to reserve judgement until we get inside. Marina said, smiling behind her frown.

    Tony shook his head, and opened the back of the car to get their bags out. After he parked in a nearby lot, Tony was able to meet Marina once more at the front entrance. Weighed down by all the fun essentials one might need for a weekend away, the two walked through the doors to the hotel.

    The concierge desk was a large black marble block, much like one an upscale bank teller might hide behind, and which dominated the tiny lobby. As for the concierge, that person was missing, and there didn’t seem to be a self-check-in option for the couple to take advantage of. The rest of the hotel’s facilities were hidden behind a pair of blacked out doors, a fact that unnerved Marina. What
