    What A Cuckold Can’t Do

    By Melissa Miranti

Do you want me to go first? Willow asked.

I can go first, Victor replied.

Only if you really want to. I know you’re nervous, Willow said.

    There was a pause.

    Yeah.

    I can do it.

    Yeah.

Okay. Willow opened up her envelope, discarding it in favor of the letter inside. The first words told her all she needed to know. Her test results had come back, and as far as the doctor could tell there was nothing preventing her from becoming pregnant. They wished her good luck in her future attempts. A smile made its way across Willow’s face, but it was tempered by sadness. If she could get pregnant, then why wasn’t she?

    Good news? Victor asked.

    I…I can, Willow said.

    Then it’s me.

It doesn’t mean that. Sometimes it just means we’re unlucky.

    Another pause.

Unlucky, yeah, Victor said. He opened his envelope and looked inside. Definitely unlucky.

He put the paper down and left the room. Willow picked the letter up, and read it.

For the next few weeks, the couple said little to one another.

    ____

I miss you, Willow said in the darkness.

I’m right here, Victor said quietly, beside her on the bed.

Not like that. I miss the way you used to be.

    Losing your dreams does that.

We don’t have to lose it, Willow said.

    Do you know—?

I know what it said. Willow cut him off. I also know something you said before. You said you never cared whether or not our child was yours, only that it was from me. Well, now you have to put those words to the test.

I…I did say that, Victor said.
