    Eager Puppy

Anticipation made waiting far, far harder. On an average work day, I could steel my resolve, get dressed, and go to work. I would take a bus, walk down the last block toward my office, and scurry to my cubicle. Not so hard to hide from the world if you ignored it.

Once there, I would defrost and drink a little bit of coffee, knowing full well that every second cost me. My manager was an asshole who wanted to make sure I was as efficient as possible. She didn’t care whether or not any of her employees were happy, so long as they produced a little bit more every day. There are limits to efficiency that she didn't understand, horrible woman.

Oh, and we couldn’t make any mistakes. So she wanted speed and accuracy, all without worrying about whether or not we were interested in stabbing her in the back. Think of that literally or metaphorically. I was fairly sure that lots of her employees could have gone either way. I certainly was one of them.

On this particular day, I was in my cubicle, unable to focus on data entry or matching up reports. I didn’t care about product projections or anything else that had been typed for me to do in my job description. I just want to go see him.

Yes, his name was Ted, but that’s not the title I used whenever I recalled his face or thought of his touch. He was someone special, but I didn’t know exactly where this was going on what might happen next.

Relationships could always be hard, I knew. I had dated a couple of guys since graduating college, and none of those relationships worked out. With the first one, he had absolutely no ambition. He just wanted to sit around and smoke pot every day. He seemed happy enough, but I needed some more security than that. Besides, I could tell he wanted me to take care of him.
