Oh Christ, Danielle thought, lowering her gaze as he came in.

Lenny was the asshole of the building, and in a way that Danielle was entirely too familiar with and entirely too sick of. He was rich, in a position of power and privilege as chief technical officer for the pharmaceutical company she worked for, thought he owned the world, and was the biggest chauvinistic pig she had ever met, even above some of her business school fraternity hookups.

Heya, sweetheart, he said, giving her a wink she tried not to look at.

    Hi, Lenny, she said, patiently.

Have you seen my dad? he asked, faking a casual glance around. He said he wanted to see me, but I dunno if he's in yet.

She, of course, knew his dad worked here, and that's how he ended up getting his job and the total protection of family that covered up any gross shit she knew he was doing. But it was an attempt at reminding her how powerful he was, and so she only said, Nope, haven't seen him yet.

She kept writing down notes on her desk – it was a recent lab test of one of their anti-opiate drugs, which could help offset the opioid crisis by dulling addictive responses by the body, and she had to sign off on furthering more tests and giving the information to the lawyers and shareholders and the like. She was clicking at her computer, as he said, Well, what are you up to right now? I never found out what you do here.

The pompous attitude raised the hairs on her neck, and she gave him an irritated stare. "I'm working, she said, firmly. I've got to get these documents scanned and printed and sent to half of the building, I don't have time to educate you on my responsibilities."

Hey, woah, woah, he said, his smile unfading. Alright, relax baby, I just wanted to know what you were doing. Loud and clear, you're working.

Danielle's jaw tensed, and – unable to bite back rage at the subtle sexism this pompous asshole was dispensing on her – she picked up the name plate sitting on her desk, dropping it in front of him, and said, angrily, "Danielle. Not 'baby,' not 'sweetheart,' not even 'Dani.' My name. Is Danielle."

Unwavering, his smile retained, and his eye contact with her held. Sorry, but nicknames are for the people I like. How does 'Deedee' sound to you?

"Fucking no! she said, hotly. Do you just not understand the word 'no' or something?"

The word never stopped me before, he replied, without missing a beat.

Not so long as daddy took care of you, right?

That seemed to finally get to him. Lenny's smile wavered, and his eyebrows narrowed, actually stung by the insult. Danielle felt a giddy stripe of pride. My dad never did anything for me that I didn't deserve, he said, neck tensing.

Oh really? she asked, with a smile. What was the job you had before this?

That barb landed home, as everyone knew he had worked here in the ten years since college. His smile, at last, faded completely, and he glared at her. You're a fucking bitch, you know that? he asked, leaning away. His body language was no longer the chill womanizer chatting up a pretty face – he was now into the all-too-familiar territory of Rejected Man Recovering Masculinity.

She said nothing, only sitting down and going back to work, ignoring him as he muttered threats and trotted out of the room.

Well, I might have risked my job, but it was worth it for a while, she thought, with a little glimmer of hope.

It's not like Lenny wasn't fuckable – he had a sexy jawline, perfect crunchy gelled black hair, looked amazing in a suit, and
