Bethany – or as she insisted she be called, Dr. Manzel – had spent all week in her basement, futzing with code and settings and tweaking the last little adjustments to the machine. She sat back, and tapped a few buttons on the keyboard, and watched as it spit out a routine verification check.

Her hazel eyes flicked down the screen as it displayed various nonsense phrases she’d gotten used to over the years at her academic study, like ‘ferros core’ and ‘biostatic emitter’, all the cornerstone of huge advances in medical science that had happened over the last decade.

Her machine was not that. This was something else – a gift to her boyfriend, and a project she’d spent over a year on. It wasn’t terribly expensive or difficult to produce, and most of the code for the program was open source and easy to compile. She was dressed in a loose button up blouse and a pencil skirt, which might have been too formal for her own home, but she wanted to dress up a bit for this moment. She opened the door, craning her neck around her kitchen and into the living room.

Her boyfriend sat on the couch. He was significantly more muscular than her; broad shouldered and fit thanks to his day laboring job in a factory. He had blonde hair cut into a cute swoop over the side of his brow, and it made his strong jaw and brown eyes stand out all the more. He was very young and very cute, and their star-crossed relationship was happenstance to them both, a chance meeting between mutual friends.

Daniel’s physique and sharp features was why Bethany was drawn to him. She lived in academia, and there was so few physically fit and handsome men there. Once they were dating, Bethany was delighted to find out Daniel was deeply sweet, respectful of her boundaries, and so wonderfully kind.

But once the passion and the admiration of each other faded, there was a deep
