Mary couldn't be late. She absolutely couldn't, not today, and not anymore.

It felt like every day she was almost killed by some jackass running a red light or ignoring a crosswalk. She ended up leaving earlier some days to make up the difference, but that would make the traffic worse, and she had no way of getting into the office before opening time unless she was over an hour early. Her boss had said, in no certain terms, that she would be getting cuts or termination if she was late anymore. And he was hearing no excuses.

On this particular day, it was no better, and she was waiting at a crosswalk, purse in hand, watching the traffic whiz by and waiting for the light to switch so she could dash for it before someone killed her. She looked up, and waited, then pulled out her phone to check the time.

She wasn't watching when, from the far left side of her vision, a giant truck bumped the curb on its 40mph turn, jostling its cargo and bouncing a single object out of it. A vial of dark blue liquid hopped out of the cab, bounced off the car, and whizzed right for Mary.

Mary let out a shriek as it smashed into her arm, shattering. Glass dug into her skin painfully and her entire bare upper arm was doused in the blue gunk. She instinctively put a hand to it out of shock, and let out a cry as it pushed the glass in ever so slightly deeper.

And, at that moment, the crosswalk finally lit up with 'WALK.'

Holy shit, a man nearby said, seeing her fall. Are you okay?

Y-yeah, she lied, clutching the bicep below the wound. She was bleeding, but not profusely, and she could still make it to work on time, but not if she dawdled.

The man, helpfully, turned and stick his hand in the air, extending a single digit and screaming at the driver. It didn't get heard and it didn't help her injury, but it made her feel better.

Thanks, she said, scooping up her purse and trotting away, a little shaky on her heels. I have to go, I...thanks.

He fell in step behind her, concern on his face as he crossed the road. "Get that looked
