Jamie sat down at his computer and logged into his favorite roleplaying forum. He figured that he had time to write up a couple of posts before he had to return to planning tomorrow’s lessons for his students. If he was really lucky, there would be a post waiting from Amber, his longest-running partner in forum roleplaying. The two of them had been weaving stories together for years now, and the latest one had reached a climax after months of building a romance. He had posted Serena’s marriage proposal to Tiffany yesterday, and was eager to read her response.

Tiffany’s post was waiting for him, and Jamie smiled as he read Amber’s emotional and enthusiastic response. It was always so satisfying to see a story arc through to a successful end. He opened his messages, finding one from Amber. Expecting a discussion of where to take their characters next, Jamie was startled to find a different sort of message entirely.

Jamie - Thank you for the lovely story. It’s been just what I needed to recover from my divorce. I hope this doesn’t come across wrong, but I was wondering if you might be interested in recreating Tiffany and Serena’s courtship in person. Unless you’ve moved in the last couple of years, we’re in the same city, and I’m ready to try dating again. You’re the most interesting woman I know, and I would like to see if we have the same chemistry in person as we do online. Please let me know and I’ll make a reservation at my favorite restaurant. Hopefully yours, Amber.

Jamie’s heart raced, then the second-to last sentence registered, and he frowned. Surely he had told Amber his real gender, had he not? With a sigh, he realized that if he had, she must have forgotten, and he had been playing female characters with her for years. He saw that she was currently online and typed a quick reply.

Amber - I’m flattered, but I’m afraid I’m not what you think I am. I am single, and still live in the same place as before, but I’m a man, not a woman. I’m so sorry to disappoint you. He hesitated, then shrugged and added I would love to take you up on the offer if you’re interested anyway. Jamie.

He hit send and tried to take his mind off the knot in his stomach by planning the week’s lessons. It failed to help, and Jamie found himself having to start over several times as his mind wandered. A glance at his computer showed a reply from Amber, and he shoved the papers aside.

Jamie - Oh! I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have assumed. There goes my hope of reenacting our latest story. But I’d still be interested in finding out whether Jamie and Amber can have as good a story as Serena and Tiffany. Are you free for a date Friday evening? - A

Jamie’s heart leapt in his chest, and he replied quickly. Yes, anytime after 5pm. This time, he didn’t even try to go back to work while he waited for a response.

Amber’s response was short, just 6:30pm then, at Estelle’s. This was followed by an address, and a photo of Amber. Jamie opened the photo and admired the smiling redhead who looked back at him. He typed one more reply, after spending several minutes digging for the best recent photo he had of himself.

    I’ll be there. - J

Jamie fidgeted nervously in his seat as he sat waiting for his date to arrive. He took a moment to look around the room, impressed at the opulence. He had never seen a restaurant with private rooms before, and the surroundings made him feel underdressed even in his best suit. Amber was already ten minutes late, and he began to worry that she had decided not to come after all, despite the excited messages she had sent him over the last week. As the pit of worry in his stomach grew, Jamie contemplated all the reasons she might have decided not to show up. She was a recently divorced young woman, a highly regarded doctor, and if this place was any indication, quite wealthy. He was just an average guy struggling to support himself on a teacher's salary, and he couldn't blame her for trying to find someone more interesting, no matter how much fun they had playing around online.

Oh good, you're still here. A woman’s voice stopped Jamie's thoughts in their tracks, and he turned to see a face he recognized from the photo Amber had sent him. Her green eyes sparkled with enthusiasm as she came over to join him at the table. She was wearing a gorgeous emerald dress that set off her long red hair beautifully, and Jamie stared at her for a moment before gathering his wits again.

Amber! You came after all! Jamie said, standing.

She stepped close to him, wrapping him in a big, welcoming hug, then stepped back and sat down at the table across from Jamie. Of course I did. It just took longer than I thought to get the twins settled with Barbara. She made a face. Everything takes longer with two infants around. They'll be worth it in the end, but it's a bit overwhelming at times.

Are you sure that's something you want to emphasize on a first date? Jamie said with a grin. I mean, that might scare some guys off.

Amber snorted. It isn't as though I've kept them a secret from you, so I'm not worried about scaring you away by talking about my babies. She smiled back at him. But honestly, if kids scare someone off, then they’re not what I’m looking for anyway. Amber took Jamie’s hands and looked him in the eyes. We’ve talked around this a bit, but I want to make things very clear before we get started. I’m not just looking for a fun time on the town, hot sex, or someone to party with. I’m in the market for a life partner and co-parent, someone who will help me raise my twins, and quite a few more kids later. If you’re not interested in that, then it’s nice to finally meet you, but we may as well part friends before things get complicated. I'll still buy dinner, of course - no one should pass up a chance to try this place.

Well, you’re certainly more direct than any of my past girlfriends. Jamie said, then squeezed Amber’s hands gently. I’m not going to run screaming from the idea, if that’s what you’re afraid of. Honestly, I’m not interested in a causal relationship either. I’m not saying I want to move in with you tomorrow, but I am looking for a long-term partner.

Amber leaned across the table and kissed him, a quick, gentle kiss that promised much more to come. "Oh good. And
