I really hated seeing my wife, Amy, cry. And knowing that there wasn't a damned thing I could do about it made it just that much worse. Money wasn't an issue. If it was, we would've solved the problem by now.

The issue was that my wife was barren; infertile.

I balled my fists in rage just thinking about those ugly words. They weren't the words you ever expected to hear from your doctor. They were earth and soul-shattering.

All I could do was put my arms around my wife and tell her that we'll find another way. That was all there was to it - we'd look at other options, even though we really, really wanted a child of our own.

When I had a few minutes alone, I confronted the doc.

Doctor Johnson, I pleaded. Isn't there anything we can do?

He looked at me and sighed. I'm sorry, Mr. Stevens...

No, I don't accept that. I've got money; I've got connections. Name your price. There HAS to be something we can do. There has to be.

A nurse who had been walking by, scurried on when she heard me raising my voice.

Again the doc sighed. I vowed I wasn't going to leave this room until we found something.

Look, the doctor said, trying to push past me. I've really got...

I pulled out a check from my wallet and handed it to him. Give us a baby and the check's yours.

I watched as his eyes bugged out comically when he saw the amount. One thing I had learned early on was that greasing palms was the best, most efficient route to getting what you want.

Before I had come to the clinic, I had wrote out a ten-thousand-dollar check knowing that it may come in handy.

Doctor Johnson stood in the doorway, unsteadily holding that check in his hands as his eyes watered.

    I shut the door.

Doctor Johnson, I said urgently. I know you have something that can help us. Name it and I'll make that check out to you. It will be our little secret.

I thought for a moment that he was going to refuse the money, but when he turned around and combed his fingers through his hair, I knew I had him.

    Okay, he sighed
