      I was sick and tired of listening to my husband constantly berating and yelling at Suzy, our maid. Just because she came from a poor family didn't mean that she didn't deserve the same respect as anyone else.

      Finally, I'd had enough and vowed to do something about it. I really felt sorry for her; she was a very good housekeeper, could make the the most delish dishes and never caused a lick of trouble.

      That's why it had to be done. I liked Suzy - and as much as I hated to admit it - I'd rather keep her than Stan.

      One lazy Sunday afternoon when my husband was out golfing with his buddies from the country club, I invited Suzy to take a load off and sit with me for a few minutes.

      We sat on the sofa drinking our ice-cold lemonade and thinking our own thoughts.

      So, Mrs. Johnstone --

      Please, call me Laura. I insisted. Maybe other women of my stature liked it, but I hated these pretentious formalities.

      So, Laura, was there something you wanted to talk to me about? You've been awfully secretive the past few days. She asked, closing her eyes and sinking back into the plush, leather sofa.

      Actually, Suze, there is. I ignored her groan. I just wanted to apologize for the way Stan has been treating you lately. It was the first time that the subject had been broached and I wasn't quite sure how she would take it.

      A couple of long, silent minutes later I heard her sniffle. It's okay, Laura, I guess I must deserve it. She hung her head and it broke my heart.

      I put my arm around her and wiped her tears away.
