    The what?

"The Preg App," Nina repeated, and still Dustin thought he had misheard his girlfriend. Preg? App? What the hell was a Preg App? She said the name a third time and added, "My friend Barbara told me all about it, about how you can make yourself pregnant—but not really pregnant. It’s like a simulation, I think. Don’t you remember last week when she came over, and she looked like she was ready to pop out twins at any second?"

Dustin didn’t know what the hell Nina was on about. Yes, her best friend had stopped by last week. They’d gone to the mall, bought some shoes—that typical girl stuff. But Barbara wasn’t pregnant. She was stick thin! And a lesbian to boot. So, her being pregnant would have been a huge shock to just about everyone.

He shook his head and said, I don’t know what kind of joke you’re trying to pull.

Nina laughed. "You still don’t remember. Oh, that’s amazing."

    Remember what?

That Barbara was pregnant last week.

Now starting to wonder if his girlfriend was high on the crazy pills, Dustin pulled out his phone and browsed to Facebook just to prove to her that Barbara was not and never had been expecting a kid. Just like he thought, nothing in her photo album showed her with a bulging, round belly. See? he said, showing Nina his indisputable evidence. Barbara isn’t pregnant. Are you feeling all right? Did some mad scientist give you false memories or something?

But Nina continued to smile, undeterred by the cold, hard facts. "You’re the one that has the false memories, Dustin. You don’t remember Barbara being pregnant because this awesome app made you forget all about it."

Right. Whatever. Rather than argue Nina’s loony theories, Dustin reminded himself that he had a busy weekend ahead with his friends, starting with Grady needing a spotter at the gym. And with Nina contending the existence of some magical phone app that could allegedly alter people’s minds, maybe a few days away from each other would do some good.

Seriously, the Preg App? All he could do was shake his head as he slipped into a tank top and athletic shorts, and then pulled off some flexes in the mirror. Hitting those weights for the past couple months was finally starting to pay dividends: real biceps. He had nothing on Grady though, who looked like he could probably lift a soda machine with one hand. And frankly Dustin didn’t want to get that big. Just have some nice definition.

I’ll prove it, Nina said, pulling him over to the bed, to which Dustin let out an audible groan. And you’ll see that I’m right.

You’re definitely losing your mind, babe.

Am not! And I expect an apology from you in about three minutes.

    Dustin rolled his eyes.

She pulled out her own phone, and he saw that she wasn’t kidding about one piece of her fanatical claims: there really was a PREG APP, which she tapped to open. Up came a screen with a blank silhouette in the middle, and all sorts of options and customization menus, though Nina’s fingers were too quick for him to make sense of any of it.

Now, just gotta figure out how Barbara did that, she said.

Babe, can it wait? Grady’s going to pick me up in ten minutes. And we’re going back to his place to drink with some other guys.

Then I can give you a teaser!

Observing his girlfriend and her latest obsession, he was increasingly confused about what the hell this PREG APP was supposed to do. The customization list was mind-boggling: AWARENESS, TERM LENGTH, ANATOMY, and more. On top of that, there was an option to send gift packages and share pregnancy.

What the hell is this app? Dustin wondered, finding himself drawn closer to his girlfriend as she explored through the menus.

Okay, I think I have it, she said, her finger hovering over the flashing START button. It’s set for three days. Trust me, you won’t believe it until you see it.

I really don’t believe it. Or anything you’re saying.

She kissed him on the cheek. You will. Trust me!

And she touched the button on her phone to start…whatever it was.

Of the few outcomes Dustin had expected, he thought it most likely that nothing would happen. Or this Preg App was some kind
