About this ebook

In order to score a business management internship, Jackson's required to step into someone else's shoes. He needs diversity credits. Awarded through the magical body-swapping app Swap Mate, diversity credits may be obtained by a university student co-living as another person for the duration of the semester—with more credits on the line for swaps in age, gender, and ethnicity.

Jackson figures his best friend's mom, Regina, is the ideal candidate. And after a few clicks, he's living in a middle-aged, pear-shaped body, gaining heaps of experience from an entirely different perspective.

But it's not so easy remaining himself. He's begun reading Regina's romance novels. He's wearing her sexiest underwear. And he can't resist exploring his body more thoroughly when he's alone. Worst of all, his new body reacts very positively to being around Regina's husband...

Your academic record is exactly what we’re looking for, Mr. Carey, the sweet young woman on the phone said. We’ve gone over your transcripts. And we think you’d be a perfect fit for the internship in our Summerdale management program. But there’s something I’m not seeing on your school record.

What’s that? I said, my barely restrained excitement—and now nervousness—forcing me to take a seat on a bench. Other college students streamed by, either hurrying from one class to another or heading back to the dorms.

    They were still grinding.

But an internship meant something more. I had done my grinding. Finally, all my hard work was being noticed by the type of people who wrote paychecks instead of grades.

You don’t have any diversity credits, she said.

Diversity credits? I thought those weren’t mandatory.

Before the next semester, they aren’t, she went on. But since your internship would begin after that requirement rolls into place, they would be. I can talk with our recruiters just to be certain, but even if we can waive the requirement, diversity credits would be another attractive feature on your résumé, whether for us or someone else.

I held the phone away from my face so I could sigh.

Diversity credits, I thought. Come the hell on!

It was something new that the business schools—and several mainstream universities—were doing nowadays. Basically, the schools had agreements with that reality-changing app called Swap Mate, and students could acquire diversity credits, either in exchange for or in addition to regular course credits, depending on the school or major. Some schools and jobs had started requiring them. Others hadn’t. But in business, diversity training was a big ingredient of successful leadership, and I’d had my fair share of learning about and appreciating diversity in the workplace even without a stupid phone app.

My next question was the scariest one. How many credits do I need?

Three would be ideal, she said. You can earn those during the fall semester, then be all set for your internship in the spring.

Okay. Do I need to fill out any paperwork?

It’s all done through the app. I’ve heard it’s really easy.

Three credits. I couldn’t remember for sure the criteria of what constituted credits, but three sounded like a lot.

Once you start earning those credits, she continued, the school administration will pass it on to us.

How soon should I start this?

Hm, one second, let me see. Oh, yes, the deadline for claiming diversity credits this semester is September fifteenth. So, you have a couple of weeks.

After the phone call was over, I was feeling mixed emotions. Getting an internship was crucial in the field of business leadership—and I was late to the party in that regard. Some of my classmates had been doing internships this past summer. Had they needed diversity credits? Probably not. Another reason why I shouldn’t have been so lazy.

Sitting there, I downloaded Swap Mate from the Google Play store and launched it. Unexpectedly, I didn’t need to input any information or sign up whatsoever; it linked
