I first heard about cloud10 last year. The BBC ran a story featuring a wide-scale crackdown on the drug in western Europe, including a tanker in a French port secretly loaded with pink teddy bears—packets of cloud10 had been stitched inside the stuffing. Supposedly the ship had been bound for America before being raided. At the time I thought it was just like any other illegal drug, and I didn’t think much of it. The bust sounded like good news.

Then in January of this year, a Reddit user made the front page by uploading a video of himself, with his head cropped out, transforming into a girl. It was a one-minute video at thirty times the speed. I remember being so mesmerized that I watched it probably fifty times—his body slimming down into the nubile, girlish shape; his body hair disappearing as if by magic; his breasts expanding out of nothing, becoming delightfully round, perky mounds; and even his junk shriveling away and becoming something much more appropriate for his new form. The latter couldn’t be explicitly shown—against Reddit policy. Instead he wore pink panties, and throughout the transformation the bulge in the front became less and less, until at the end of the video he had a completely smooth, flat front. There was no evident trickery to me: he hadn’t tucked it back, edited it out, anything like that.

Despite repeatedly saying it was real, most people in the comments suspected some kind of video effects were at work. The general consensus was a tracked fade with a female look-a-like—which then evolved into a CG body when VFX experts argued how impossible it would be to match up two people’s movements for thirty straight minutes. Regardless, very few actually thought it was authentic.

The guy was going to post a follow-up video of a more-detailed transformation, but he was banned before that ever happened. Right before the thread was banished to the abyss, he replied to a comment that asked him what his real method was.

His answer: a photo. More specifically, a photo of a little round, baby-blue tablet with CLOUD10 written on it. He said the effects lasted about eight hours. The thread was deleted so quickly afterward that I legit might have been the only person to see it.

I spent that afternoon researching any news stories I could find about the seized tanker in the French port, and anything else about pink teddy bears. A similar account of the drug bust was on all the major news sites, but nowhere did anyone say what cloud10 actually was. It was merely mentioned as drug, or substance, or illegal medication. When in fact it was an instant gender-swapping pill. Although, even with this new information at my disposal, the internet gave me scarce pickings. I couldn’t find cloud10’s maker or distributor, couldn’t track down the redditor who had sacrificed his account, and couldn’t unravel the mystery behind some crazy gender-swapping pill—well, other than a completely fictional pill that had spawned countless GIFs, captioned images, and fantasies about changing sex.

They didn’t appear to have anything to do with cloud10, though.

Sadly, no other findings came for nearly all semester. The worldwide drug-bust stories had zero mention of baby-blue pills, the transformation video was gone from the internet—but safely stored on my hard drive—and cloud10 was never heard from again.

Until when I least expected it…

Late that spring semester, my grandfather’s fight with
