    CHAPTER ONE

    This is so lame, Brent said, slapping his tray down onto the table and flopping down onto the bench. He stared out across the cafeteria, toward the group of giggling girls. One of them stood on a chair, trying to hang up a Homecoming banner, while the others congregated around her. She was impeccably dressed, her body tight and lean. Brent looked around the room, noticing that half the guys in the senior class watched her. She didn’t seem to notice though, too intent on her task. She flipped her short blonde away from her face, and he stared at Sandra’s alluring red lips. No wonder she’d been nominated for homecoming queen. She was dressed casually since it was Friday, in just a pair of jeans and an oversized t-shirt, yet the vision of her still captured half the school—both the guys and the girls.

    Why do we need to be subjected to such things? Brent grumbled.

    He turned to his best friend and teammate, Ryan, waiting for him to agree with his statement. Ryan shrugged when he realized Brent was expecting an answer. I’ve already got a date for Homecoming.

    Brent snarled at Ryan’s back when he turned toward Amy, waving at her from across the room.

    Amy? Brent asked. Amy is who you asked to Homecoming?

    Ryan shrugged again. She asked me. I said yes.

    Brent sighed indignantly, but his friend didn’t bear
