This summer had long since passed the point marking it as the weirdest one of Taylor’s life. When that boy from Biology 101 had asked her and her roommate, Mae, if they wanted to earn some cash working at his uncle’s vacation lodge in the Cascade Mountain, she had never imagined it would lead to all of this. On paper everything looked so normal. They’d spend the summer doing odd jobs around the property and walk away with money for the next year. Of course, that was before she’d learned just how weird this place was.

The lodge itself was normal if a bit tacky, full of stuffed animal heads and furniture made from antlers. It even had what purported to be a museum, which was actually full the sort of roadside attraction that was now more ironically cool than anything: stuffed jackalopes, fake mermaids, and badly faked photos of monsters. Taylor had found it an enjoyable place to work; the vacationers were friendly, the food was good, and there was plenty of free time between jobs.
