It had started like any other day: woken by the house maidens just before lunch, a quick meal off of the deer they had taken yesterday, then training with the royal master of arms. The prince felt he was growing better and better with his sword and lance all the time. Before dinner, he had taken a ride through the town, surrounded by his retinue, and had commented about the fare of the local women who might be invited to the hunting lodge for tonight’s festivities. They had only been here a few weeks, not time yet to make their way through the whole of this town’s young women, so the pickings were still ripe.

He met with Lady Elena briefly in the gardens. He still wished he'd managed to convince her to stay back with his father's court. They were not officially betrothed yet, but there was an understanding between the involved parties that such a state was in their future. Having his future wife hanging about the place while he was trying to have a good time was rather restricting. Still, he liked Elena and staying in her good graces was worth the effort. He merely needed to keep his activities out of her view.

Dinner was extravagant: rich bread, sauced meats, and wine. Lots of wine. His head buzzed with it when by the time he called to his steward and asked that some of the fresh young ladies from the two be invited. He drank more with his friends as they waited, a slew of raucous commentary passing back and forth between them.

Their reverie was interrupted by an unexpected interruption. Elena appeared at the door to the great hall, a cloaked figure at her side. Normally she dined in her rooms and retired early, so this was a surprise. The prince jumped to his feet, wobbled unsteadily for a moment, and rushed to her.

My dear, he said, whatever are you doing up so late?
