The back room of the theater, half dressing room and a half workshop, it was strewn with a thick layer of mess on every surface. Discarded bits of costume hung over the backs of chairs on the edges of tables. Partially assembled animal cages, prop boxes, and objects whose purpose was unrecognizable littered the floor and ever horizontal surface. At the center of this, stretched out across a battered chaise longue, lay the owner of all of this: Anna Taz, woman of magic and mystery.

Holding the newspaper in one hand and the door knob in the other, Michael eyed her warily. She hadn’t yet acknowledged his presence, although he had not tried to be stealthy. Her long legs, still wrapped in a pair of fishnet stockings, flexed as she stretched with a lazy motion. She had already tossed her suit jacket and white gloves, but her silk top-hat was pulled down over her eyes.

Michael made a polite-sounding little cough. After a moment of still further silence from the woman, he finally spoke. Um, Miss Taz?
