Eden.

It was the single largest game world that had ever been created. Using advances in neuroscience and virtual reality, it allowed players to use all their senses and truly feel as if they existed in a game world. Sometimes, when players played too long, or when certain things happened to them in the game, they might start to lose their grip on reality. This was called ‘Reality Loss Syndrome’ or RLS.

In Eden, players are separate from artificial constructs. These artificial constructs are known as Non-Player-Controlled. Or, NPCs. They act like people, they eat and drink and have lives and families, but they are artificial intelligence. Oftentimes, a player isn’t always able to tell between an NPC and another player.

Given the nature of the science and technology behind the interfacing equipment used to connect with Eden, it has been hypothesized that extended use of the game, or very rare circumstances can drive a player’s body into a coma. If they’re still connected to the game when this happens, their mind can be trapped in the game world. Their virtual body, would be their only body.

There have been a number of situations where players have been found in a coma, and players in the game have languished over not being able to log out. These players, are known as ‘eternals’.

My eyes opened with a gasp.

I stared up into the blackness of the helmet that connected me to Eden. I slowly pulled it off my head as dull light from the window shown over me. I ran a hand through my hair and slowly sat up in bed.
