Stories with wishes always have happy, predictable endings.

Bill squinted, gazing at the long stretch of sandy beach with the golden sun shining into his eyes. It was nothing short of packed. He had feared as much; the weekends were typically the busiest, and the weather was perfect for it. Everyone else had the same idea, it seemed, judging by the countless umbrellas dotting the sand.

"Aw man, now we’re never gonna get a good spot, Tony groaned. It’s a Saturday, Bill. What do people do on Saturdays? They go to the damn beach."

Bill turned his head away. His friend’s breath still smelled of alcohol, thanks to a late-night binge.

Maybe if some of us got up earlier, Bill said, there’d be a spot right near the water. I wish there was.

We’ll be here all day waiting for that, said Zane.

Bill’s hopes were steadily waning. The beverage cooler was beginning to feel heavy in his hands. He had Tony to thank for that. His chubby friend consumed more beer than anything else, sometimes starting before the noon hour—if he got up that early. Hangovers were nonexistent if you never stopped drinking. That was his theory.

The beach was bustling with all sorts of people, Bill saw. There was plenty of room to throw down the cooler and set up some towels where they were, but the waves were far off. He preferred to be up by the water, to feel the misty spray peppering his skin while he scouted the sand for some cute girls in skimpy bikinis. They were out in large numbers today.

Bill ogled one such girl who strolled by the three of them, giving them all a glance. Her teal and gold bikini was skintight, though it could’ve been a little more revealing. Bill watched her as she went on, staring at her ass.

As if on cue, she spun around and gave him a quick wave before continuing on.

Bill, man, over there, Tony said, grabbing his shoulder. He was pointing toward the water. You see those three getting up? Looks like they’re leaving.

    Our lucky day, added Zane.

Bill saw. An older woman grabbed her purse. Two other dudes were with her. They were packing up and gabbing all their belongings. Tony had already started to jog toward the spot before they left. You couldn’t waste any time out here; good seats were hard to come by.

Tony was out of breath by the time he reached the trio of lounge chairs. He threw himself into the nearest one under the umbrella and grabbed a bottle of sunscreen, applying a generous amount to his fat nose.

Meanwhile, Bill arrived a moment later, dropping the beverage cooler into the sand and stretching. From the sound of it, some of the ice had already melted. Regardless, he doubted the contents would last long. Tony would make sure of that.

I can’t believe our luck, Zane said, making himself comfortable. Just when all hope is lost. Impeccable timing.

Yeah, Bill agreed. It was a good thing we saw it. People out here can be fucking vultures when a good spot opens up.

Bill turned to the water, inhaling the moist air at his nose. He spun around just in time to see a wave crashing into the beach, catching one teenage girl by surprise and knocking her straight off her feet. She disappeared under the water. All of her friends were laughing, but not for long. Horror came to each of their faces as her body returned to the surface, limp and unconscious. A lifeguard was already sprinting to the scene, urging everyone to give her room.

"Damn, Bill muttered. He glanced around the beach. No one else seemed to be paying attention. I wish she was okay."

A moment later, the girl showed signs of movement. The lifeguard held her up as she coughed up water and gasped for breath. More waves rolled in as they all helped her out.

Bill breathed a sigh of relief as he turned to his friends.

    That was a close one.

Tony finished chugging a can of beer. What was?

Bill pointed to the water’s edge. Didn’t you see? There was a girl out there who almost—

Tony belched. "Goddamn. Smell that one. Better yet, don’t. Bill, you should take this opportunity to find a new girlfriend. There’s plenty of fish in the sea, as they like to say. He lowered his sunglasses. I’m
