A ren't you glad I got you to come here tonight? Evelyn said, sloshing her drink slightly as she swayed. I had never seen her intoxicated like this, but she seemed to be enjoying herself. And as long as she wasn't driving, what did I care if she indulged a little. It wasn't like we had to be at work together tomorrow.

It was New Year's Eve and Evelyn had convinced me to go out for the evening. I didn't know the hosts, but Evelyn did. We worked together at the local university, scientists in one of the labs. It was one of those public-private partnerships that meant some company would get to use our research to make billions of dollars while the actual people doing the work got paid very little.

However, I was okay with that. After all, the other option was to join industry full time, taking on an enormous salary in exchange for no longer being able to publish my scientific findings. If I had wanted to do that, I wouldn't have been working at a university in the first place.

And I wouldn't have met Evelyn. I wasn't sure if we were just colleagues or actual friends. Such relationships were strange to me. I had a hard time building relationships with people at all. But Evelyn had taken me under her wing when I started working with her and I was eternally grateful. That is probably why I let her convince me to attend this party.

Normally I would have avoided something like this, preferring the quiet of my own home, reading the latest book from one of the endless series that caught my attention. That was assuming Lance was out for the night, which I was sure he was. We shared a house, but our relationship didn't go beyond being roommates. We lived two separate lives and were two very different people. We rarely crossed paths, which was how we liked it.

I took another sip of my champagne. As much as I enjoyed my books, champagne was still a special treat and I savored its flavor, despite knowing it was probably a cheap brand. However, since the effects were largely the same, regardless of quality, I was not going to be picky about what I drank.

Yes, I admitted, finally replying to Evelyn. This is a good time.

It was strange saying those words. There was always the sense of loneliness when I was surrounded by other people I didn't really know, or even like. Especially when it came to events such as parties and the like. At least the champagne was flowing freely. But tonight felt different. I had a smile on my face and was open to mingling with others.

    Hi, I'm Mallory.

The sudden intrusion into Evelyn and my conversation caught me by surprise. I wasn't bothered by it, but it felt jarring. Yet the voice that interrupted us was friendly and kind. I turned and was greeted by an attractive young woman, tall and thin and draped in clothing that looked more like a college student would wear than the adult woman she clearly was. But somehow it suited her.

I'm Evelyn and this is Viviana, Evelyn said, introducing both of us to the stranger. I didn't mind Evelyn answering. I was socially awkward around new people.

Oh, cool, Mallory said. I don't know anybody except for the hosts, so I'm just kind of going around and introducing myself. Sorry if I interrupted your conversation.

No, please, join us, I forced myself to say, trying to make it sound as natural as possible.

Thanks, Mallory said. I hope you guys are having fun. It's a nice little party.

You work at the university, too? Evelyn asked. She may have been tipsy, but she was still observant enough to notice the pin Mallory wore with the school crest on it, confirming her association with the university as well, albeit in an unknown capacity.

That I do, Mallory confirmed. I'm kind of the gatekeeper of the front door. Most of my days are boring and I love it that way. It gives me time to read and write stories.

So what is it that you do specifically? I asked.

Mallory smiled. Basically I am a secretary for the university administrators, answering phones, taking messages, directing people to the right offices, that sort of stuff. It's boring, but it's a paycheck and I get to meet fun people. Like you two.

Boring sounds good, Evelyn said, raising her glass.

We all chuckled before finishing our drinks. Our glasses emptied, Mallory flagged down the passing waiter who carried a fresh bottle of champagne. The three of us received a generous pour.

To a boring year next year, Evelyn cheered.

Mallory and I agreed and clinked our glasses together as we echoed Evelyn's wish for a boring year ahead. It made sense to me, wanting the year to be uneventful and nothing crazy. As much as big events could be fun, it seemed all the more likely to be something bad, especially after recent years.

Whoa, is it just me or was the waitress who brought our champagne busting out of her bra or something? Mallory commented. She looked behind me to where the buxom woman
