N o more pollution! No more toxic chemicals in our air or water! I heard Victoria shouting behind me.

I turned around and saw her standing atop a small platform, waving her fist in the air as she gave her latest speech about the terrible company that was Archer Global Enterprises. It was the type of company that owned other companies, that was the secret purveyor of evil, but always from behind the scenes. It was never in the limelight. But Victoria, our friend Sara, and I were trying to change that.

We say enough already! Victoria continued. Let's hold this company responsible for the destruction and devastation it has wreaked on our world. They deserve no less.

The crowd erupted with cheers and applause, but that didn't seem to be enough to satisfy Victoria. She continued on with her rousing speech, bringing up different points each time she repeated her lines. She seemed determined to show just how awful Archer Global Enterprises really was. I wasn't sure I had ever seen her quite so fired up before, and we had been involved in more than our fair share of activism over the years, going back to our time together in college.

I looked over at Sara who stood next to me. Her eyes were glazed over though. While she might have agreed with everything Victoria was saying, Sara simply couldn't muster the same level of excitement. Her heart was more in line with what Victoria was saying than the way she went about it. Personally, I thought both Sara and Victoria were on point, just taking two different approaches to achieving the same end. It was a testament to their friendship that their differences never affected their relationship.

While Victoria led the charge, and Sara took the more intellectual approach to changing people's hearts and minds, I had settled into a support role. Sure, I still believed in our cause, and I would even step out in front of the cameras if asked to do so. But my talents weren't in politics like theirs were. I could come up with a few one-liners, but without the passion to drive it home, those jokes and quips always fell flat.

That was when Victoria passed the bullhorn over to me and stepped down off of the platform. Now the eyes of the crowd were turned to me, the pressure squarely on my shoulders. This was what I had volunteered for. We all needed our parts to play, and I just hoped mine wouldn't be a complete disaster. After all, I wasn't a professional public speaker like Victoria, or someone with a fancy education like Sara.

Go on, Amber, Victoria said to me, prodding me forward. Tell them what you told me. Don't be shy now.

Victoria leaned in close, her perfume tickling my nose, something spicy with a hint of flowers. I had always wished I could regularly afford perfume like that, but being a perpetual student working part-time jobs had always prevented that sort of splurge. Then again, after hearing everything Victoria had to say about that corporation and the products they made, I wondered if maybe her perfume had been purchased from Archer Global Enterprises. It would have been one of its subsidiaries. AGE didn't actually produce anything on its own. That was the genius of the company. It was a conglomerate that invested in hundreds of different companies, yet it always remained untouchable.

Hi. Thanks, Victoria, I began. I cleared my throat, then looked out at the crowd. I see the harm these companies do every day. I've walked along some of these rivers, ones this company has had a hand in destroying. We need to find a balance between living our lives in harmony with the natural world around us and creating jobs. Jobs are great, but not if they cost people their homes and their very health.

My delivery wasn't perfect, but I thought I did okay. And while I had heard Victoria rant and rave about that corporation on so many different occasions, that time I truly felt the emotion myself. As I spoke, I felt tears prick my eyes, threatening to escape and stain my face. These things mattered to me, more than I think either of the other girls realized.

I handed off the bull horn to Sara, not wanting to say anything more. I wasn't quite sure what else I could even
