Diamond walked along the harbor, enjoying the sights of the Italian Riviera. This was not the sort of thing she ever could have imagined herself doing before. Her life had been one filled with hard work and more than her fair share of disappointment. But all of that seemed to be behind her, at least temporarily.

Taking a gap year between college and graduate school had been necessary. Diamond was burned out on school and she needed a year off for her own sanity. She was a stellar student and had already secured her spot in her graduate program of choice, fully paid for, too. But she deferred her enrollment a year, taking some much needed time for herself.

The money for her trip around the world had been hard to come by. She had worked hard for it, but knowing the next several years of her life had been paid for by her graduate program, she had been able to splurge a little bit. Not that she was living in luxury. Diamond mostly stayed in hostels and other inexpensive lodgings. And she walked whenever she could, not wanting to pay for transportation unless she absolutely had to.

However, that was not to say that Diamond was unable to enjoy herself. Each and every day was a new adventure. And last night was no exception. She had found herself a quiet little restaurant to eat dinner at. The patio overlooked the harbor, although the view was mostly blocked by other buildings. There was still a view and it was beautiful. But what made the night so special was the people she met.
