Dr. Olivia Lodes stood over the controls of her machine, excited to see it all come to life. This had been her life’s work, creating the new medical imaging device. The theory behind it was sound, but up until this point, no one had been able to turn that theory into reality.

Are you ready to turn it on? Olivia’s assistant, Grant Gales, had been along for most of the ride. He had been helpful, although he was definitely more of a hands-on kind of guy, the person who did a lot of the building of the machine. But that building was all based on Olivia’s blueprints. She had designed the device. Grant had built it.

However, Grant was more than just a lab assistant. He was a doctor in his own right, albeit one who struggled to get his doctorate. Despite the fact they finished their degrees at the same time, Grant was several years older, having needed more time to complete his education. He was still smart. He had to be to earn the degree. But he was not nearly as smart as Olivia. Her education had been a breeze for her. Grant had to work hard for each one of his classes and all that came after that.

In some ways, Olivia and Grant coming together for this project had been ideal. She was the brains and he was the brawn. While Olivia was good at the overarching concepts and designs, it was Grant’s efforts that made sure the machine actually got built. And now it was time to test it for the first time.
