As I stepped through the doors and into the warmth of the lodge, I was struck by how different my surroundings were from what I had seen only moments before. Outside was cold and dark as night set in, but inside the air was warm and bright, illuminated by the light of a crackling fireplace. In front of the fire sat an older man nursing a drink in a highball glass and looking sullen. To the side of the room stood the man who had greeted me when I arrived at the lodge, smiling brightly, though somehow looking nervous.

Welcome! You must be Aurora, the man greeted. I am Oliver, the lodge director.

It's nice to meet you, I said.

Oliver took my hand and shook it vigorously. I'm so sorry, Ms. Stirling, but the weather is threatening to turn. I may have to send you back down the mountain tonight if it gets any worse.

My app says it's just going to be a couple of inches of snow. Surely it can't be that bad.

Your phone doesn't have access to the weather station up on top of the mountain, Oliver replied. And the Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning. I will be staying, of course, but it's expected to get quite treacherous out there. I would gladly refund your money if you wanted to leave, but the roads might already be getting slippery.

I shrugged. This trip had been a long time coming and there was no way I was going to let a little snow scare me away from my skiing plans. I had earned this week, after all. Between work and more work, I rarely had the time to take a vacation, but I had finally been able to secure some time off this week. I hadn't been skiing for years, but this was my opportunity to change that.
