A NON-MODERN INTERPRETATION OF REFERENCE AND REPRESENTATION

    1. INTRODUCTION

In the historical period known as MODERNITY, the work of painters, musicians, architects, scientists and philosophers meets who, despite their differences, are all qualified as MODERN. However, there are some notes that would characterize the moderns in each of these planes individually; For example, in the case of philosophy, modernity is associated with a particular style of philosophizing in search of timeless and universal solutions for the treatment of problems (Toulmin).

Ludwig Wittgenstein supported the disconcerting nature of certain philosophical practices such as the habit of posing problems that have no solution. The so-called modern philosophy would have been responsible for establishing certain ontological ruptures in binomials such as phenomenon/thing in itself, mind/body, representation/represented, etc.; ruptures that somehow come from a more general division between the SUBJECT and the OBJECT.

Therefore, according to BRUNO LATOUR, the moderns would perfectly exemplify Wittgenstein's words. Having established these ontological divisions, they encountered the difficulty of locating certain hybrid elements, and the most significant problems that the moderns had to solve were related to the attempt to CLOSE THE HIATO between areas that, in principle, had been postulated as antagonistic.

    2. THE MODERN BIPOLAR MODEL

The problem of REPRESENTATION in modernity arises from the distancing between the orders of thought, language and reality. On the one hand, there would be an order of subjectivity or the mental with its internal private states and objects, and on the other, an order of objectivity or the real.

THE SUBJECT CANNOT HAVE A DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE EXTERNAL REALITY, ONLY REPRESENTATIONS OF IT; therefore, knowing or knowing is defined as the possibility of adequately representing. It would then be necessary to establish the criteria to determine which representations are adequate or true.

In the Cartesian version, what should be explained is HOW AN ISOLATED MIND WOULD BE ABLE TO ADEQUATELY REPRESENT EXTERNAL REALITY. Subsequently, the representations would stop being related exclusively to isolated subjects, to begin to establish relationships with cultures, traditions and paradigms. However, the general idea of an external reality only apprehensible through representations persists.

For most of the 20th century, the philosophy of science was attuned to these general modern dualisms; on the one hand, reducing the study of science to the analysis of theories, on the other, stipulating the existence of facts that can be described, enunciative and capable of substantiating the solidity of theories, and, finally, restricting its work to the study of the link between theories and facts.
