Rewire Your Brain - KR Goswami
Chapter One
Grow New Brain Cells
You’re nothing but a pack of neurons.
-Francis Crick
Is it possible to grow new brain cells? Yes, it is possible. The oncologist says that it is a matter of relative state of individuals. There are various factors responsible for increasing or decreasing the number of cells. One of our psychology students asked in the classroom that there are more than 100 billion such cells; what difference will it make if you increase a couple of thousand cells? But just think, if you are able to grow your nerve cells, say about one hundred per day, what will be the status of nerve cells after the age of 40 years? Small incremental value for a longer time may almost replace most of the old cells as the brain constantly loses hundreds of cells per day. If you have good quality nerve cells in more quantity than your friend, will you be able to learn fast? Or will your mental health be better than your friend's? The functions of the brain will be faster or slower?
Neurons are generated from neural stem and progenitor cells. Most active during pre-natal development, neurogenesis is responsible for populating the growing brain with neurons. Suppose the multiplication of neuro cells starts decreasing
considerably; what will happen? Definitely, you may develop certain brain disorders.
The hippocampus
Humans and other mammals have two hippocampi on each side of the brain. The hippocampus is a part of the limbic system. It plays a vital role in consolidating information from short-term memory to long-term memory and spatial memory that enables navigation.
Sometimes, psychiatrists suggest taking different routes to reach home or instruct to brush the teeth with another hand. The data transformation may become faster with the increased amount of neuro cells. A single cell is connected to almost ten thousand other cells, and therefore more number of cells will have better function and better memory retention in the case of the limbic system.
Depression
Depression doesn't spring from simply having too little of certain neuro-brain cells, but it can be one of the reasons. Rather, there are many possible causes of depression, including faulty mood regulation by the brain, genetic vulnerability, stressful life events, medications, and medical problems. It's believed that several of these forces interact to bring on depression. But, an increased amount of neuro cells will undoubtedly reduce the intensity of depression.
Cancer Drugs
During the treatment of specific cancer or tumors, the cancer drugs are so powerful that they destroy a considerable amount of neuro cells. For example, chemotherapy drug doxorubicin may destroy not only cancer cells but also healthy cells as well. Even after a lot of care, there is a massive loss of good cells, and ultimately patients have a lot of unbearable side effects.
Choices Of Activities To Increase The Neuro Cells
Some of the activities are responsible for increasing the neuro cells, whereas some activities are detrimental to reducing the subject cells. For example, new learning experiences will increase the cells, but stress will decrease the neuro cells. Sex may increase the neuro cells, but too much sex may deprive the sleep and ultimately decrease the number of neurons. Running or brisk walk will certainly increase such cells. When you get older, the rate of neurogenesis drops. In fact, there is a reduction of overall immunity at the rate of 0.7% per year after the age of sixty.
Role Of Diet For Increase Or Decrease Of Neuro Cells
Diet has a vitally important role in the variation of cells in the brain. When you have a calorie restriction of nearly up to 30%, it will increase
neurogenesis. Intermittent fasting and a diet that contains blueberries will also increase neurogenesis. The counter effects of omega 6 by omega 3 especially received from salmon fish, will increase neuro cells. Diet with high saturated fat will have an adverse impact. It is a well-known fact that alcohol may increase your heart efficiency but definitely decrease neurogenesis. However, resveratrol contained in red wine is promoted for the survival of new neurons. It has been found that a soft diet impairs neurogenesis as opposed to food textures, which may require mastication, chewing, or efforts to chew crunchy food. It also matters when you take your diet and the quantity you consume. Proper sleep and rest cannot be ignored for the increase of neurogenesis.
As far as exercise is concerned, any type of movement that increases blood flow towards the brain will definitely increase the number of neuro cells. So let us increase our activities and food habits to increase our neurogenesis and ultimately increase our efficiency.
Chapter Two
Improve Your Neuroplasticity
The human brain is a wonderful organ. It starts to work as soon as you are born and doesn't stop until you get up to deliver a speech.
-George Jessel
When you scan your brain, the image shows so many facts about the overall health of your brain. For example, a glass of wine may be suitable for your heart, but it is never good for your brain. Furthermore, it has been observed from brain scans that even if you do not take alcohol or do not smoke, your brain is sometimes scattered and damaged. It means that your bad food habits are responsible for your brain health, but also some of the bad habits also play a vital role in spoiling your brain's health.
Healthy Brain V/s Sick Brain
With a healthy brain, you are happier and healthier. You have more creativity and innovations, but you are sadder and sicker with an unhealthy brain. You are rigid and dull. You must have seen that whenever there is a brain injury and somebody survives, the victim's activities are pathetic. Some of the damages may not at
