The Brain Fix - David Haze
INTRODUCTION
Within the last 20 to 30 years, scientists have shattered conceptions about the brain and how it works. Even within the last 3 years, important new information about the brain and how it functions has surfaced due to recent advances in brain scan technology.
Neurologists have recently been organizing and publishing their findings.
The Brain Fix, Now explores the newest findings about the brain and how to ramp up your brain’s capacity to make your life better in areas like memory, health, thinking, wealth building, and learning.
Several conclusions can be reached concerning the new research.
One important conclusion is that the brain and the body are in much tighter sync than previously guessed. Thus a healthy body makes for a better brain. Exercise grows the brain. In fact, one leading neurologist will tell you over and over that what is good for the heart is good for the brain.
Another conclusion is that the brain is amazingly flexible and powerful. It is not hard wired
as scientists once thought.
The idea of IQ, based on the assumption that the brain is two dimensional, is too simplistic. Your brain, in fact, contains multiple types of intelligence.
When it comes to money, especially investing your money, the brain has an unfortunate primitive glitch
that can cause you to make bad decisions when under pressure. Due to scan technology neurologists have tracked this brain glitch. How to counter this glitch is vital to your wealth-building plans.
Is there a happiness region in the brain? Did neurologists find happiness
? Can man control happiness, creativity, and tranquility by mapping and controlling brain waves?
Finally, how does the sex affect brain? The conclusion that researchers reached is that there is indeed a powerful connection between sex, the brain, and the body.
CHAPTER 1: Building Your Brain
(in a nutshell)
It's not how smart you are, it's how you are smart.
Howard Gardner Interview "Common Miracles" ABC, 1993
You can increase your brainpower. And you can do it by utilizing several powerful approaches. You can easily find areas you can work on that will make your brain more powerful today than it was yesterday.
The brain is far more flexible than scientists thought. Many factors affect your brainpower. New information has been pouring in over the last decade from findings in neuroscience thanks to the advances in brain scanning equipment. Now is the time to educate yourself and create a plan of action to unleash your brain's awesome potential. In the old days, scientists thought you could measure the brain's intelligence and assign a number to it and that was that. But an IQ number falls way short of telling us about intelligence. The standard IQ test was a flawed instrument, because it was based on a two-dimensional view of the brain. It was also a popular belief that intelligence was set
and that the brain was hard-wired.
You were either smart or your weren't.
IQ tests were measuring two types of intelligence, linguistic and logical/ mathematical. But the human brain is not limited to these two types. Howard Gardner, a professor at Harvard, explored seven specific types of intelligences (later adding an eighth and hinting at a ninth).
When you plan for building your brain, you should become aware of the different types of intelligences and decide where you want to direct your efforts. When you read through the chapter The 7 Types of Intelligences, zero in on which type you want to develop. People aren’t strong in all intelligences; Gardner thought that most people were good in three of the types.
Developing your strongest types of intelligence is important because these are the ones that should dictate your life’s work. When you work with your strengths, you will find life easier and more fulfilling. In short, you will make money at your strengths, not your weaknesses.
Customizing Your Brain
The good news is that the brain is not hard-wired. You do not have a number (IQ) that is set for life. What the brain thinks about and what it gets experience in, it becomes more intelligent about. It is that simple. Brain cells adapt and change according to what you spend your time on.
Neuroscientists have proven this using brain scanning technology. Through brain scans scientists can look at specific types of intelligent tasks and map them. For instance, let’s take a look at the musical task of playing a guitar or violin. There is an area of the brain where brain cells work to accomplish this feat of intricate finger and hand movement.
Now if intelligence was set and the brain were hard-wired, the size of this area in the brain and the number of cells dedicated to the playing of a violin or a guitar would be set in stone. But scientists have found this to be false.
Take a look at the brain of a person who is not a professional violinist or guitarist through a brain scan. That area of the brain (having to do with finger and hand movement) will be a certain size and have a certain amount of cells dedicated to hand and finger movement associated with playing a violin or guitar. In addition, these cells will have a certain number of connections to each other. This will vary, of course, from person to person.
Next, let’s take a brain scan of a professional violinist or guitarist, one who has spent years playing the violin or guitar and thousands of hours learning the skills and complexities of their profession. If you look at their brain, you will find that the area dedicated to this kind of hand and finger movement to be much larger than the average person’s. You will also find more brain cells dedicated to this specific intelligent task. In addition, you will find an extreme amplification of the number of connections between these kindred cells.
Why does the brain grow smarter when you think? When you think in certain areas like mathematics or drawing, the brain allocates more cells to that type of intelligence, and they make more connections with each other. When a cell is born, it waits for something to do. If it finds nothing to do, it dies. By exercising your brain, you are giving cells a reason to function, and they adapt to the kind of specialization that they need to.
So what does all this mean? It means that the brain customizes itself according to where you put your thought and time. The bottom line is this. Don’t think so much about having a powerful brain as customizing the power of your brain in areas that make sense for you. If your are a writer, spend quality time writing and learning how to write. Rest assured, your brain will grow more powerful in the area of the brain that controls the process of writing.
The biggest question any person faces even early in their lives is What am I good at?
