#1 The problem is that five out of ten marriages end in divorce. The reason is that without love from him, she reacts without respect; without respect from her, he reacts without love.

#2 I was a child in an unhappy home. My parents divorced when I was one, and they remarried each other when I was five, but they separated again when I was in third grade. I saw and heard things that are permanently etched in my soul.

#3 Sarah and Emerson’s response to gifts is very different from mine. I was surprised to learn that Sarah will thank people a dozen times when something touches her deeply, while I only thanked her once.

#4 I was married to Sarah in 1973 while I was completing my master’s degree in communication at Wheaton Graduate School. We went to Iowa to do ministry, and I completed a master’s of divinity from Dubuque Seminary.

    #1

The problem is that five out of ten marriages end in divorce. The reason is that without love from him, she reacts without respect; without respect from her, he reacts without love.

    #2

I was a child in an unhappy home. My parents divorced when I was one, and they remarried each other when I was five, but they separated again when I was in third grade. I saw and heard things that are permanently etched in my soul.

    #3

Sarah and Emerson’s response to gifts is very different from mine. I was surprised to learn that Sarah will thank people a dozen times when something touches her deeply, while I only thanked her once.

    #4

I was married to Sarah in 1973 while I was completing my master’s degree in communication at Wheaton Graduate School. We went to Iowa to do ministry, and I completed a master’s of divinity from Dubuque Seminary.

    #5

Sarah and I are very different when it comes to social interaction. She is nurturing and loves to talk to people about many things. I am analytical and process things unemotionally. I get energized by studying alone for several hours. When I am with people socially, I interact cordially but am less relational than Sarah.

    #6

I had a difficult time explaining to Sarah why I had forgotten her birthday. It had been unloving of me to forget, and I knew that she was hurt, but at the same time, I felt judged and put down.

    #7

The author’s wife, Sarah, and he had a lot of good times together, but they also had a lot of bad times. They would often fight about his habit of leaving wet towels on the bed, and he would often drift back into being preoccupied with other things.

    #8

Tension between spouses, as well as between parents and children, can tear down the self-image of both parties. It is not Sarah’s first choice to travel, study, and teach, though she is willing to do so for the sake of the ministry. I dislike fixing things that break in the home since that is not my talent.

    #9

The secret to a happy marriage is the Love and Respect Connection. It is the key to any problem in a marriage. This is not just a nice little theory; it has everything to do with the kind of marriage you will have.

    #10

When a husband feels disrespected, he has a tendency to react in ways that feel unloving to his wife. When a wife feels unloved, she has a tendency to react in ways that feel disrespectful to her husband.

    #11

The Love and Respect Connection is within Scripture, but so is the threat that the connection can be strained or even broken. To put this book in brief outline form, I want to help couples control the Crazy Cycle, energize each other with love and respect, and enjoy the rewards of a Godly marriage.

    #12

Husbands, love your wives unconditionally, and wives, respect your husbands if they have earned and deserve your respect. The wife’s primary need is for love, and the husband’s primary
