    THE RISE OF INDUSTRIAL GERMANY
      
    In one generation, Germany went from being a collection of economically backward states to a unified empire with rapidly expanding industry and advanced technology. This transformation was accompanied by the use of military force as an instrument of national politics and by strong nationalism. As a result of this process, an industrial monster emerged that challenged the position achieved by England in world markets.
    The distinctive features of German capitalism would be a high concentration of economic power in advanced industries and a close association between industry and banks.
