Since plans and strategies are not set in stone, the things may not move as planned and people may not respond as expected. Introduction
You’ve just moved into your new independent office, equipped with your own Mac and your name shining on the door. You have been a Star Performer. You’ve worked really hard to get here. Now you are the Manager.
Congratulations on your promotion are pouring in, and your confidence, motivation, and morale are at their zeniths. But sooner than later, your bosses’ expectations and the job responsibilities start to pull you down. Every time you falter or miss a deadline, you can feel your rival managers snickering, and hear your juniors whispering behind your back. You are confused, finding yourself in the midst of chaos. The chaos follows you everywhere you go. This is the first challenge, which every new manager has to face.
It is common for people who excel in non-management positions to be promoted to management roles. Many such people who get these promotions find the transition from a non-managerial role to a managerial role difficult. They forget that it was their personal skills and expertise which helped them to excel, to distinguish them as Star Performers. But the skills required to be a manager and team leader are altogether different. You must meet set goals by synchronizing the efforts of your team. Meeting your boss’s expectations and making erstwhile colleagues take and follow orders from you can be draining. You may have a fear of failure, of disappointing your boss, and of missing deadlines (due to lack of adequate support of the team). Failures in the early days of leadership roles are common. Don’t let the pressure of a new role bog you down. You can handle it and can do better. Even seasoned leaders once faced failures, but they learned from their mistakes and became better leaders. If you, as a new manager, are feeling a bit disoriented or confused, believe me: it is normal. Becoming a manager is not the destination. It is the start of new journey. It will be tough but rewarding. This book will help you to adapt faster to your new role and make your journey smoother. I will share the 5 essential skills of a leader which you should develop as a Manager. These skills will help you to become not just a leader, but also a Corporate Tiger.
Managers who are good leaders are always in short supply, whether it is in the field of business, politics, or not-for-profit organizations. First-time managers spend more of their time and effort in getting the job done rather than focusing on their leadership skills. No wonder the research conducted by CEB shows that 60% of new managers fail within the first 24 months, as they lack the formal training to lead and build trust in their team. Leaders have to constantly keep building their skills to lead effectively. This is evident from the data from the Chief Learning Officer Business Intelligence Board, which shows that 94% of learning organizations either plan to increase or keep their level of investment the same in leadership development. As a manager, it is pertinent to acquire leadership skills at the early stages of your managerial career. These skills will not only help you to succeed as a manager, but also help you to become a Corporate Tiger.
The definition of leadership has changed over time and varies by individual. When we hear the word leader,
the names of heads of the state immediately pop into our minds; if you are in a business meeting or conference, the names of successful business leaders will come to mind. These business leaders often hold titles such as CEO, Managing Director, Unit Head, or Branch Head. But the quality of leadership is not exclusive to higher positions or roles in the hierarchy. It is
