PREFACE
C URIOSITY, MULLING, ENHANCED self-awareness leading to self-administered therapy, creativity, and then resiliency. This is the new process for therapy. It leaves much more to the abilities of the survivor and their own drive and adaptability. It gives much more flexibility for the survivor and needs the professional to be client centered. This change is to give the survivor the best outcome possible. At present, this has been reduced to using a measure of financial compensation and physical abilities.
Success in life is not primarily determined by these factors.
These all contribute to a new sense of self to be sure; however, they do not embody the totality of existence on this earth. The answer to this question is much more philosophical in nature than I am inclined to write about. Here I am only trying to help the survivor and those who care about all aspects of a survivor to figure out the best methods to realize this goal.
I am a survivor myself—I am dysarthric, ataxic, and diplopic. As a result of these difficulties, I was reduced to only being comfortable when I was still and thinking. The result after some years is the following. Please enjoy responsibly.
INTRODUCTION
T HE FOLLOWING IS the overall process of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) rehabilitation, or at least it is what it needs to become if there is any hope of resiliency for the survivor. After all, this is what rehabilitation should be about. Use it or lose it
is a popular expression. In brain injury rehabilitation, you need to create a need and then wait for the brain to heal itself. Using the brain to help guide its own thinking process is a new perspective to rehabilitate brain injury. As some faculties are restored, use them and this will allow further healing.
The age of curiosity is well known in children. Why is this quality not promoted in those who, after an acquired brain injury, are undergoing a sort of rebirth.
CURIOSITY
C URIOSITY, MULLING, ENHANCED self-awareness leading to self-administered therapy, creativity, and resiliency are all covered in this main section of the book.
Curiosity is an important trait for a survivor to have restored or at least fostered
