    My name is Tessa Young. I am a doctor and fitness instructor and feel extremely honoured to have been invited to write the foreword for such an inspirational woman.

    I was first introduced to Susana over 10 years ago by my mother, who had been seeing her as a personal trainer following a very painful divorce. Susana was the highlight of her week and she used to return from her sessions floating on a cloud of happiness and positivity. It was not long before my Mum wanted to share this angel with those around her. She very kindly gifted me some personal training sessions with Susana for my birthday. To help explain how this came to be, and my feelings prior to first seeing Susana I need to start a little further back.

    My fitness and weight loss journey started in my early teens. We were brought up in an idyllic setting, on a farm in country UK, by an active Mum who was interested in healthy eating and whole foods. I developed curves before I was ready to accept them and tried to blast them off with 5am Jane Fonda and then Body Step videos, before school. Despite my greatest efforts, I was always described as strong, or firm, and voluptuous, or curvy. I used to struggle with these descriptions and my interpretation of them. When I started studying for medicine, I was disappointed with the amount of time spent on fitness and weight loss, considering that it seemed to be the route cause of most of the medical conditions that we were learning about. It was always added on to management in the form of lifestyle changes. This was elaborated on by explaining that we needed to advise patients to lose weight by reducing their calorific intake, increasing their exercise and reducing saturated fat and sugar in their diets, with no assistance or further guidance suggested, like weight loss is an easy thing to do and accomplish. I knew there must be a better way to help myself and my future patients, so I developed my knowledge further in the areas of disease prevention and nutritional medicine. How much easier would it be to reduce your chances of getting sick rather than trying to battle with a chronic condition or the complications of a chronic condition? Also, if you end up with a condition or an impairment, for whatever reason, how much easier would it be to maintain a fun and active lifestyle, if your body was as fit and healthy as it could be, before and after diagnosis? These optimal health aims are not really focused on in medical school and so I have done a lot of individual research that has brought me to the conclusion that a holistic approach is what is needed to create optimal health and fitness. It is true that most people who carry extra weight feel out of control to some degree and that regaining that control can feel like an insurmountable task. I also felt that it would be a great struggle, if I ever accomplished my goal, and my internal dialogue was very negative. That was my state of mind when I met Susana. I was excited, but anxious to see a personal trainer, as I feared judgement or embarrassment. I later realised that this was because I was living behind quite a few excuses and beliefs that had set me up for failure in the past. I need not have worried. Susana was a ray of positive sunshine and inspired me to grow and commit in ways that I had not believed possible. My weight loss and healthy lifestyle goals are constantly being reassessed, but I have never been as fit, strong and at peace with myself as I became after starting to follow some of Susana’s advice. We can accomplish such amazing things and attract abundance in our lives, by removing inner conflict and presenting ourselves to the world with a mind, body and spirit all in harmony.
