Increase Your Metabolism - The Complete Guide To Lose Weight Naturally And Boost Your Energy - Edric Harper

Chapter 1: The Basics Of Metabolism

    Metabolism Defined

Metabolism, in its most basic form, refers to the body's conversion of calories from food into energy. It is a series of chemical reactions that provide your body with the energy it requires to function – and, as a result, for you to live. You couldn't move or think if you didn't have a metabolism. Metabolism provides energy for your body and individual organs to function properly.

Consider this to better understand the significance of metabolism: if your heart stops beating, you die. Similarly, if your metabolism stops, you die – because without a metabolism, you won't have enough energy to breathe or beat your heart!

    How Metabolism Functions

Let us begin with the act of eating. Food enters your digestive tract as you chew and swallow it. The food is then broken down by digestive enzymes, which convert carbohydrates to glucose, fats to fatty acids, and protein to amino acids. The nutrients are absorbed by the bloodstream and carried to the cells after they have been effectively broken down. Other enzymes and hormones then work to convert these nutrients into cells or building blocks for tissues, or to release them as an energy supply for the body to use right away.

Types of Metabolism and Their Components

There are two basic metabolic processes: one that is constructive and is responsible for the body's energy production and storage, and the other is destructive. The other is destructive, but in a good way, because it breaks down nutrient molecules to release energy.

Anabolism refers to the constructive metabolic process, while catabolism refers to the destructive process.

Anabolism encourages the growth of new cells, the maintenance and repair of tissues, and the storage of energy – typically in the form of body fat – for later use. Small nutrient molecules are converted into larger protein, carbohydrate, and fat molecules.

Catabolism, on the other hand, is in charge of providing the body with energy right away. Instead of accumulating, it degrades the nutrient molecules to release energy.

These two processes do not occur concurrently, but rather are balanced by the body.

Catabolism, in particular, has three components, though some attribute this to overall metabolism:

    1. Basal metabolic  - Sometimes called resting metabolism This is the metabolism component responsible for keeping you alive by ensuring normal body functions. It is also known as resting metabolism. Even if you spend the entire day in bed, your basal metabolism is still active.

Basal metabolism is the most important component of metabolism, accounting for 60 to 70% of the calories consumed. People who want to lose weight usually try to increase their basal metabolic rate (BMR).

    2. Physical movement - This can range from simple finger movements to strenuous exercise. Typically, 25% of the calories
