Preface
While this is a book on communication, this is also a book on leading a happy, dynamic existence, and understanding life on a deeper level through discovering more powerful ways to connect with those around us.
Communication is everything. It is how we connect. It is how we create meaning in our life. It is how we have deep interactions that shape our entire lives and our relationships.
It’s what we all truly want in life. We want to have the freedom and the liberty and the wherewithal to connect deeply with others. It is human nature, and we all long for intense and meaningful connection to those around us.
We want to be able to go deeper and it is in our deepest exchanges with others that some of our most profound feelings are awakened. And it’s in these intense and intimate heartfelt exchanges that we begin to get a better sense of life, connections, and healing ourselves into wholeness.
We all need healing in some way or another. And connecting from the heart with another kindred heart is where healing begins.
The greatest emotions we have are when we are deeply connecting heart to heart.
Perhaps you are approaching a point in your life either by way of conflict or lacking meaning and find yourself looking for better ways to converse and connect. You know there is a better way, but you haven’t found it.
Well, let me offer you this — the keys to that better way are here in your hands, in ten steps that build upon one another.
We are going to learn a new way of communicating and connecting that can help you deepen bonds and strengthen your closest alignments.
The instructions here, laid out step by step, along with additional resources I provide will give you guidance to start on your journey of enhancing communication with others.
INTRODUCTION
There IS a Better Way!
As human beings, communication is everything to us. Every interaction we experience and every connection we make is a two-way exchange. We are part of an endless weave of constant communication. Every time we lock eyes with another human being, we communicate — verbally, silently, or spiritually, consciously or subconsciously.
And actually, NOT locking eyes can be deliberate and is also a communication – essentially stating to the other person I don’t want to communicate.
And body language of not wanting to communicate goes beyond that by showing gestures that might explain why. For example, averting the eyes but offering a smile could indicate shyness or embarrassment. Speaking but consistently not meeting eyes could indicate hiding something. Folding the arms and looking away with lips clamped shut could indicate anger. So meeting someone’s gaze is communication, but so is refusing to meet it.
There is an art to communication and connection and there are simple steps we can take to master this art.
We can never be experts at something if we don’t truly understand the deeper philosophy and concept behind that something.
Most of us learned through observation what communication is or what we think it means, and how best to communicate and connect. However, communication is so much more than just the superficial exchanges of our daily lives. The greatest communication is not simply an exchange of words, but a connecting of hearts. The greatest communication invokes feelings and emotions and leaves us touched in some way.
I’d like you to consider the transformative power of presence and its ability to enhance our lives.
It is this awareness, when awakened during communication that will change everything in relation to others. It’s bringing your heart to the exchange and allowing your heart to align with another.
Moving forward I invite you to arrive fully to each and every exchange with presence, an open heart, and compassion.
Expert communication is about learning how to be a powerful communicator in every aspect of our lives. Once we learn and understand how this works and how to best apply the techniques we will learn in this book, it truly will enhance your life and give your connections greater depth and meaning.
You’re not just going to have shallow superficial exchanges with people. There won’t be any need or desire for small talk. Even if it’s a quick chat or a quick exchange it’ll be richer, sweeter and softer.
You might not have even realized until now that there are better, more powerful ways of communicating and in turn connecting with those around you.
We were told and learned by observing how our parents did things, how our teachers interacted with us, and how people around us we admire interacted, and we assumed this was the only way.
We emulate what we see. We do all of the formalities, minus the depth.
It’s communication, but a barely there low and simple form of communicating that will never take us where we want to go. What we truly need is a form of communication and level of connection that will help us grow and evolve.
A more effective form of communication will promote a deeper level of connection. This will not only encourage us to be better communicators, but also better human beings.
How Important is Authenticity?
Most of us are not living powerfully and dynamically, and that is no fault of our own. We don’t realize that throughout life each and every one of us will have many challenges and struggles. We may have many hurts and things that happen to us that leave a lasting impact.
Essentially, these things that happened to us formulate our opinions and make us who we are as adults. We don’t realize that we’re not being authentic in life, or not having authentic relationships, or not having authentic communication.
Taking advantage of presenting yourself authentically in all your interactions means enhancing all your relationships, creating the greatest gift we can give ourselves and others in our life.
Learning and applying all, or at least a few, of the suggested tips in this book will reveal how powerful and life changing it can be to master communication and deepen bonds.
And that mastery is truly an art.
How Do We Discover/Uncover Our Authenticity?
Self-inquiry is a powerful way to begin. When we begin to self-reflect and ask deep, meaningful questions, our lives truly begin to unfold in magical ways and take on powerful meaning.
Self-inquiry teaches us to be receptive. It teaches us to enhance our awareness and build on our ability to be mindful of others. It allows us to be more empathetic and less judgmental. With each discovery of mindful empathy, we are increasingly able to express ourselves more profoundly and with greater authenticity. We will enjoy meaningful interactions, which will enrich our lives overall.
The goal of self-reflection is to learn to understand our hurts, challenges, and struggles. And in the inquiry of those challenges we can learn to accept them powerfully without those hurts weighing us down.
Accepting powerfully means surrendering to it. Letting go of the idea of needing to change something or things needing to be different. This is accepting powerfully. Be in total acceptance of it and allow a deeper understanding of something. Perhaps there is even a lesson that awaits us. Powerfully accepting is to stop resisting and allow lucidity in to your world. Let it all unfold as it may.
Allow the acceptance to guide us forward in profound and magical ways.
Acknowledging them, yet not carrying them forward, not allowing them to close us off to the point we may find ourselves unable to respond to other people. With self-reflection, we can keep old wounds that have become part of our nature from blocking our authentic communications.
We can make sense of why we respond and react to certain things, not just writing it off as Oh, that’s just how I am…
but truly understanding. We comprehend human nature in ourselves and others, which inevitably allows us to communicate better and have deeper connections.
Some of the steps I share in this book may strike you as very obvious, but the idea is to apply them in your encounters to create strong, reliable communications that can be flexible, while retaining their core strength.
