    Chapter 1

It wasn’t the first time Joseph Flint had felt like turning down a case, but when Alexander Edwards asked for his help, he came nearer than he had ever been before to saying, sorry, I can’t help you.

It wasn’t that Flint disliked the man; it was the problem he had, one he thought should be dealt with by the police—not private investigators. And that’s what Flint told him. But Edwards was unshakable. Police cannot be involved, my daughter’s life may depend on it, he stressed.

Flint drew his chair closer to Edwards until their knees were almost touching. Do you have proof your daughter’s been kidnapped, sir, he continued, or are you only assuming she has?

Edwards pulled a crumpled scrap of paper
