Chapter One
A letter from a solicitor saying would she make an appointment to come and see them was the last thing Ruth expected. Curious as to what it was all about, she made arrangements to call at the offices of J Carter and Son, solicitors, in her lunch break the day following.
Ruth Marchant had been orphaned at the tender age of three, when both her parents were killed in a multiple car pile-up on a motorway in France. For the next fifteen years, she spent time in orphanages or being fostered out.
Now in her late twenties, she had a place of her own, a good job and a steady boyfriend.
She’d met Harry Banks through a friend at work, and for the past twelve months they’d had an on/off affair. Harry was steady, dependable and predictable, where as Ruth was just the opposite, she wanted adventure, excitement; she felt life owed it to her. This was something Harry couldn’t provide, which was why she didn’t want to take things any further in their relationship.
When she arrived at the solicitors at the appointed time, she was greeted with smiles and handshakes by the man himself, J Carter Senior. His name was on the door of the office he escorted her into.
Come in, Miss Marchant, can I get you anything to drink—tea, coffee?
he said.
Ruth said a polite, No thanks,
and sat down on the seat she was offered.
John Carter was in his late sixties and clean shaven, his dark hair turning grey at the temples. He had a business air about him that inspired confidence.
He took the chair behind his desk. I can see you are wondering what this is all about,
he said. Well, the reason I asked you to call and see me today is because I have some news for you.
Ruth glanced at her wristwatch, it was coming up to one-thirty. She just wished the man would get on with whatever it was he had to tell her; she had to be back at work by two.
Have you ever heard of the name Simon Truborn?
Ruth shook her head.
Well, for your information, Miss, it would seem you were his nearest relative.
I have never heard of him,
said Ruth. Look, I don’t know what’s going on, but unless I go now, I am going to be late back to work.
I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but your relative Mr. Truborn has passed away and as you are his only living rela…
Ruth pushed her chair back and got to her feet. Oh, I think I’ve got it now,
she cut in sharply, "as his
