Chapter One
A walk though the graveyard was something Sally did most days on her way home from work. It was a shortcut, and she enjoyed the solitude after a hectic day in the office.
Peace and quiet, no ringing phones or tapping of keyboards, just bird song and tranquility.
Sally Judd was a woman who joked with friends she’d never been made love to, never been kissed. Joked that she was happy with her lot, didn’t need a man. But in the small hours of the night when she tossed and turned on her single bed—that’s when she faced up to the truth; she was lonely—desperately lonely.
She had been at the back of the queue when looks had been handed out. From an early age, her mother had told her not to worry as looks weren’t everything. As much as she’d have liked to believe this, it was no help. She was a no looker, and that’s all there was to it.
Her parents had split up and gone their separate ways three years previous.
Her father now had a new wife who was not much older than she was, and her mother had moved to Spain to be with her latest boyfriend.
Not wanting to see their only child left homeless after the split, her parents had given her a share of the proceeds of the family home when it was sold. She’d used it as a deposit on a neat little end terrace in a secluded area of the city.
It was a lovely evening and, in no hurry to get home to an empty house, Sally wandered aimlessly through the graveyard, stopping occasionally to read headstones. Most, if not all the graves, were well tended, decked with floral tributes from loved ones.
She sank down on a bench when she came to one and glanced at the flowers she’d purchased earlier from a florist, daffodils in tight bud.
Lovely, aren’t they?
Sally turned her head and shaded her eyes to see who had spoken. It was a man who looked to be in his early thirties, casually dressed in jeans and T-shirt.
I’m sorry, did I scare you?
he said taking the seat next to her.
No,
she returned reassuringly. "I didn’t hear
