    Chapter One

A letter from a solicitor saying would she make an appointment to come and see them was the last thing Ruth expected. Curious as to what it was all about, she made arrangements to call at the offices of J Carter and Son, solicitors, in her lunch break the day following.

Ruth Marchant had been orphaned at the tender age of three, when both her parents were killed in a multiple car pile-up on a motorway in France. For the next fifteen years, she spent time in orphanages or being fostered out.

He took the chair behind his desk. I can see you are wondering what this is all about, he said. Well, the reason I asked you to call and see me today is because I have some news for you.

Ruth glanced at her wristwatch, it was coming up to one-thirty. She just wished the man would get on with whatever it was he had to tell her; she had to be back at work by two.

Have you ever heard of the name Simon Truborn?

    Ruth shook her head.

    "Well, for your information, Miss,
