Chapter One

I stare up at the walls in front of me, unsure if I'm more impressed or nauseous about what Reese has created. We may never have been close, but we're still family, and that's confusing in some ways. I don't approve of the walled city she's founded, or the way she's treating the vampires and humans inside, but I have to admit the feat itself is impressive. Until she did it, I'd never have thought it possible to create a place shut away from the rest of the world.

She calls it a vampire's paradise. If the reports are anything to go by, then it's nothing of the sort.

Can I help you? a tired-looking woman at the reception desk asks. We're not here to cater to tourists.

I'm not a tourist. I want to enter the city.

She raises an eyebrow. We don't get many these days.

But you're still letting people in, right? I can't talk Reese out of all of this if I'm not inside the walls with her. My entire family has sent countless letters over the past couple of decades, but they've all gone unanswered. I doubt they even get in front of my sister.

What puts them off? I ask despite knowing I shouldn't.
