John Poindexter is a retired English teacher who was inspired to write crime novels from his experience as a Special Agent for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. His job description was that of Counterespionage Case Officer and has conducted numerous criminal, narcotic, fraud, and counterespionage investigations. He is a winner in the Filbert Publishing June 2010 Short Story Contest and also a 2010 Peevbody Award winner. His writing career also has dealt with writing articles on investigative techniques for the Pacific Stars and Stripes while working in Japan, and reports of investigation used to prosecute individuals. Mr. Poindexter received a B.S. degree in English from Indiana State University and his investigative training at the AFOSI Academy located in Washington, D.C., the FBI, CIA and various other governmental agencies.

    Chapter One

    It was all Patricia Michaels could do to drag her five-foot, one hundred and five pound frame out of the sticky bed. But like usual, she climbed out and headed for the shower, hoping that today would be different.

    As she stood in front of the mirror trying to put on her make-up, she was already beginning to sweat. On days like this, it was useless to even try to stay cool. Even the shower didn't do anything but get her long brown hair soaking wet.

    Patricia left the apartment and headed downtown thinking that she might stop and see her old friend, Sergeant Eric Brown. Eric might just have a lead on a case for her. The private investigation business is a funny one. Sometimes people won't even talk to her because she’s a woman. They say a woman can't do what they want done. They would be surprised what she can and can't do.

    Patricia pulled up to the Central Police Headquarters on South Michigan Avenue a little after eight. Eric was climbing out of his car. If I can catch him before he gets inside, I won't have to put up with the catcalls from the desk jockeys, she thought.

    Eric, do you have a moment? Patricia said.

    Hi Pat. How are you doing? Eric said and smiled.
