    The wind beat incessantly against the windshield as the car hurtled through the night. Linda gripped the steering wheel with both hands, staring out into the darkness. She realized there were no other cars on the road. A profound sense of loneliness could be felt, along with a growing sense of dread. But what was she afraid of? She was out here alone…

    The trees on either side of the road reached their skeletal branches toward her, only to recede swiftly as she passed them by. Linda turned up the heater, feeling a chill. The autumn breeze was outside, but it seemed to be seeping into the vehicle through every crevice. She turned on some music, turning up the volume. It was good old down-home gospel music. Linda sang along, feeling the desire to tap her feet to the rhythm. She giggled. I would probably flood the engine if I did that!

    Letting out a sigh, she turned the music off. This is not helping. The woman felt cold inside and nothing she did could provide a distraction.

    Blinking her eyes, she saw a flash of movement from somewhere up ahead. She prayed it would not be a deer.

    It was in her lane and coming straight towards her… Linda grew concerned. Though it was still some way off, she became fearful. She glanced behind her to make sure the way was clear, and then pulled into the other lane.
