Took first prize in Nottingham County Council short story competition with a story called "Irish Mouse Tales," which was published by Gypsy Shadow Publishing as an eBook in July of 2012. She has had her poetry and short stories read on local radio. Violetta is a prolific writer of short fiction, having written and published more than 40 short stories with Gypsy Shadow.

    Chapter 1

    Joe Flint had the beginnings of a cold and wasn’t feeling well. He pulled a tissue out of his pocket and blew his nose. He had man flu. I don’t think I should have come in this morning, George, he moaned pathetically.

    Georgina hunched her shoulders. Then why did you? she replied. She knew of old what her partner was like if he had any aches and pains. He wanted sympathy and she was in no mood to give it. Before they’d left for the office that morning, they’d had a blazing row as to whose turn it was to take the dog out for his morning walk. Georgina reminded him that before they’d got the puppy, they’d both agreed to take it in turns to walk him around the block every morning before leaving for work. Flint wasn’t keeping up with his part of the bargain and she was cross, very cross.

    In case you’re interested, Joe, after his morning walk, the puppy is now fast asleep in his basket next to Alison’s desk.

    Alison was the receptionist Georgina would have been happier sacking than giving a pay raise to, like Flint had done when he’d asked her to act as dog walker during working hours when they brought the puppy in with them.

    Of course, I’m interested, snapped Flint, you should know that by now. Anyway, don’t you think it’s about time we thought of a name for him. We can’t keep calling him Puppy, can we?

    Alison calls him Raffles, Georgina enlightened with a shrug of the shoulders.

    Raffles! I quite like it don’t you?

    Raffles it is, then. I’m happy with that if you are. The only thing we have to do now is get him to answer to his name and walk to heel. Don’t you agree?

    The phone rang before Flint had time to answer. It’s Mrs. Croft, he mouthed.
