    Chapter One

Georgina stood arms folded, surveying the office Flint, her partner, had gone behind her back and rented. And she had to admit it was a big improvement on their present place of business. It was twice the size, which meant they would no longer be under one another’s feet when they had clients. It was also in a good area, close to the city centre.

She mulled over the fact that first impressions were important, and the reception area had that covered in buckets full. It was light, airy and it didn’t overlook any other building. Yes, Georgina had to admit, Flint had done the right thing renting the place, even if she didn’t like to admit it.

Well, What do you think now you’ve seen the place? he asked.

Georgina shrugged her shoulders. Suppose it is an improvement, she admitted grudgingly.

He put his arm round her shoulder. Come on, say it… there’s no comparison, is there? he said.

Georgina turned to look at the man she had only recently taken on as a partner. He was over six feet tall, broad at the shoulder, narrow at the hips, and although he wasn’t the handsomest of men, he had a smile that could light up a room. The day they moved in Alison, the receptionist, dropped a bomb shell. I’m sorry to have tell you this but I am temporarily handing in my notice, she said.

What do you mean, temporarily? You’ve only just returned from a year’s maternity leave, huffed Georgina.

I mean, I’m not leaving for good Miss Baxter, only until Verity starts proper nursery school. But you needn’t worry. I won’t be leaving you in the lurch, I’ve arranged for Sonia, my best friend, to stand in for me until I come back, she said.

Georgina, gobsmacked at the girl’s audacity, didn’t know what to say.

And when can we expect to see this friend of yours to interview her? she asked.

She’s here now, Miss, but there’s no need for you to interview her. I’ve already told her she’s got the job, she said.

Georgina shook her head, not able to believe what she was hearing. Flint came to the rescue.

If your friend is already here, you had better tell her to come in so we can see if she’s a suitable applicant for the post, he
