    Chapter 1

Georgina didn’t realise she’d been stabbed, hadn’t felt the knife piercing her skin. It wasn’t until she saw blood seeping through her top that the truth hit her and she passed out.

The day had started like any other. Georgina had been the first up and it wasn’t until the tantalising aroma of percolating coffee was circulating, that Joe, tousle haired, in need of a shave made his appearance.

What’s… for breakfast? he asked mid yawn.

Georgina had been the first to leave for the office, a temp was starting, covering for Alison the receptionist, who was on maternity leave. Joe had taken Raffles the dog for a walk ’round the block before setting off.

Georgina opened her eyes to find she was on a gurney being wheeled down a corridor. She tried to sit up. A nurse put a restraining hand on her shoulder. Don’t move, Miss Baxter, you have been involved in an accident. We are just taking you to X-ray, she said.

"An X-ray! Why do I need an X-ray? Confused, puzzled Georgina shook her head trying to clear it.

Less than thirty minutes later she was wheeled to a side ward and put to bed. Nothing made any sense to her. For starters, what was she doing in the hospital? She was wearing a hospital gown but couldn’t remember getting undressed. More worryingly still, she couldn’t remember what had taken place since leaving home that morning, everything was a total blur. What she did know however, was that she had a blinding headache and a dressing on her right side.

She wanted answers, but there was nobody around to ask. Light coming from a window hurt her eyes, she closed them, lowered herself down on the pillow and moaned pitiably.

Are you all right Miss Baxter? It was the nurse who had taken her to X-ray.

Georgina squinted up at her. I’ve got a blinding headache, my mouth is dry, I could do with a drink, and my side hurts, but apart from that I feel fine thanks, she added.

I’ll see if I can find the doctor, ask him if it will be all right to give you a couple of paracetamols and a drink of tea. I’ll be right back.

    Georgina
