Violetta Antcliff has been a member of the Nottingham Writers' Club for over twenty years. A winner of numerous short story competitions, her work was area short listed in Waterstone's Wow Factor story competition. Took first prize in Nottingham County Council short story competition with a story called "Irish Mouse Tales," which was published by Gypsy Shadow Publishing as an eBook in July of 2012. She has had her poetry and short stories read on local radio. Violetta is a prolific writer of short fiction, having written and published more than 40 short stories with Gypsy Shadow.

    Chapter One

    Joe Flint was not a happy man. Sat elbows on desk, fingers steepled, he looked a picture of abject misery.

    Georgina Baxter, his business partner, confidante and on-off woman friend, walked over to where he was sitting and patted him affectionately on the shoulder.

    Joe, you knew when I offered to take you on as a partner it wasn’t going to be all smooth sailing, didn’t you? she said. So why the sour face?

    Flint’s steel blue eyes met hers, and for a few seconds they locked gazes.

    When I accepted your offer of a partnership, I was under the impression you meant on equal terms. After all, I didn’t come in empty-handed, did I? I put a sizeable amount of money into the business.

    Joe, Georgina huffed in exasperation. You knew the terms when I offered to take you on as a partner, so why the long face? Have you changed your mind? Do you now want out?

    Of course I don’t. Flint got to his feet. I’m angry because you said you would have my name added to all the stationery and such and what do I find whilst I have been away on business, he emphasised the words. You’ve had the name on the door changed to G. Baxter and Flint Private Investigators. Tell me, why not J Flint and Baxter?

    Georgina plonked down on the chair Flint had just vacated. Because, O’ Wise One. I was here first. My office, my desk. She grinned up at the man who now stood towering over her. Joe, we both knew there would be things that would need sorting out, didn’t we? For one, if we plan to extend, then these premises aren’t big enough, are they? We both need our own space, or at the very least a desk each. Don’t you agree?

    Flint hunched his shoulders, a sign he agreed—if somewhat reluctantly. Yep, I suppose as usual you are right, he said. We have got to get our heads together and have a serious discussion where to go from here.
