A winner of numerous short story competitions, her work was area short listed in Waterstone's Wow Factor story competition. Took first prize in Nottingham County Council short story competition with a story called "Irish Mouse Tales," which was published by Gypsy Shadow Publishing as an eBook in July of 2012. She has had her poetry and short stories read on local radio. Violetta is a prolific writer of short fiction, having written and published more than 40 short stories with Gypsy Shadow.

    Chapter One

    Put that knife down. Damn you I said put it down. You don’t scare me, I wasn’t frightened of you when you were alive and I am certainly not frightened of you now you’re dead. For a couple of seconds the carving knife hovered in mid-air before clattering noisily to the floor.

    Tess knew her unwelcome visitor had left. She could no longer feel his presence, and there was no chill in the air. Trembling uncontrollably, she made her way to the kitchen, filled the kettle from the tap over the sink, sank down on the first available chair she came to, and waited for the kettle to boil.

    Minutes later, cup of tea in hand, she went over what had just taken place, relived the nightmare.

    She knew who was doing the haunting; it was her ex, Harrison Grey. She knew if she told anybody they would only say she was grieving over her loss, which was untrue. The day of his funeral she had breathed a sigh of relief. They were not, and never had been, the perfect couple. Their marriage had been a sham, and any love there’d ever been had died long ago.

    A knock on the door broke into Tess’s tortured meanderings. She stood and went to see who it was. The last person she expected to see standing there was her next door neighbour, Ford Spencer.

    Sorry to disturb you, he said, I saw your light on, so I guessed you were in.

    Well you guessed right, so what is it you want? Why have you come? she asked.

    Spencer looked agitated, and she wondered why. You know I have just moved in, don’t know my way around yet… He hesitated. It’s my dog…

    Tess put her hand up palm toward him to stop him talking, she could see he was troubled. I think you’d better come in, tell me what the problem is. She stepped to one side, inviting him in.

    Take a seat, make yourself comfortable, she pointed toward an easy chair. "I’ll be with you in a minute, I’ve got some cakes in the oven, it’s time they came out.

    Minutes later she returned
