Introduction
In recent years, researchers, psychology students, and news writers have wondered if technology is increasing the frequency or occurrence of narcissism. To understand the answer it takes knowing what narcissism really is, the signs, what is and what is not narcissistic behavior, and how to deal with and treat it.
Everyone can display elements of narcissistic behavior without being diagnosed with Narcissism Personality Disorder (NPD). Have you ever wished that someone would focus more on you in a specific moment? Perhaps you and another family member are going through a loss, but most people are asking the other person how they are and ignoring you? In most situations you would not care, you wouldn't want to be the center of attention, but in this instance you want attention to be focused on you.
Is there a time you can recall that you were trying to block other emotions, so you sought attention from anyone who would give it to you? Perhaps you were even picking a fight or verbally abusive because of your anger or anxiety?
The average person feels emotions like guilt, anger, denial, grief, acceptance, and empathy. There are times when emotions are bottled up or they become too much and the first person they see gets the brunt of those emotions. It is perfectly natural.
Narcissism, particularly a diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), is not a one-time occurrence. It is not based on the situation the person is in, but behaving in a manner that makes them the center of attention in all situations. Narcissists believe they are above others, they often use grandiosity as a way to feel better, and they can lack empathy. Emotions run shallow in narcissists.
